Reminder: Being consistent with the amount of hours you draw is better than drawing every once in a while for longer periods. Drawing in a burst and feeling miserable after because you've been trying to muster enough motivation to get back to it and do it again is unhealthy and will probably make art harder for you. Take care everyone, hope we can all improve

BIG ADVICE: Go between learning the fundamentals of drawing people (or other things) and drawing just for fun. Just working on art studies can be really depressing, so you must do fun drawings as well and try not to criticize yourself too much on those fun drawings (easier said than done). You can mix art studies and art creation /doodles for more effect.

More like actual arts is systematic long term learning, but the Internet and social media makes it look like it was done more effortless than it really is, kind of like how most people visiting an art gallery or stream something without seeing all the surplus of thumbnails, notes, re-drawings, and the failed attempts before the final product could be viewed publically. It's a perspective-based fallacy that could be associated with those other subjects too, depending on how they're advertised/portrayed (such as if most people would view themselves as not able to break a board while watching martial arts videos, without knowing about what type of wood the boards would be, or the techniques honed through practice to break the boards).

James, you read my mind, i was so frustrated that i was happy with my results but not with the time that it took me to get to them, and it only got worse in this quarantine, comparing my times with pros, asking them, and feeling guilty when they replied me that a cool ass rendered piece took them a couple of hours, when that would take a couple of days. this video reminded me of what art should be, fun, even tho i want to work in the industry, i should make my way there enjoyable, thank you for touching this type of content aside from the draftmenship ones

I don't know if you necessarily need to "slow down". I'm sure you and everyone else here, heard about the story of the pottery teacher who told one half of their class that they need to focus on quality, and the other half they said they need to focus on quantity. In the end it showed the ones that made tons of clay pots ended up showing improvement in the quality, where as those that focused on quality hadn't finished even one. I don't know if this is a true story, but there's something to be said for doing lots of pieces as fast as possible, because your quality will eventually improve.
@moderndayjames4 жыл бұрын
I moreso meant to slow down your mind not that you should slow down the drawing process. I totally agree with you on prioritizing quantity since inevitably the quality will come with time.

I think the best thing I got from this video is that little chart. The fact that its a process that repeats itself is something I forget often times. I will learn a little of something and then once the cycle is complete I will realize that knowledge isn't enough and I will learn a little more. I think it's very important to remember this cycle to have a healthy mindset about art.

-You need a goal. But what if I like everything? What if I like drawing characters as much as drawing landscapes and items. As much as I like sculpting things in 3d. What then? down into the pit of mediocrity?

No , one at a time my friend. Drawing should be fun, but just like with anything you want to become more than proficient , then you have to buckle down and do the hard shit. I love anime and eventually want to do that, buuut, I’m learning realism first so when I eventually do what I want, I can do it easily and interchange between cartoon and realistic features . You need to create goals and move on once you hit them. I’ll give you an example. In one month, I want to have done 3 portraits. So every week, I do drills of each face feature an hour a day (eyes, nose , lips, and ears. And hair) then I put my learning to the test and do a portrait. Once I’m done with that, I will move on to anatomy , probably start with each body part then eventually move on to gestures and stuff

I definitely need more practice on my fundamentals but unfortunately I just have no motivation to actually study them. I just want to make finished pieces, not studies. I think it stems primarily from falling into the social media pit of feeling like I have to be posting all the time. Pressuring myself to make art every week to post and never having time to just study the fundamentals. Might be a good idea to take a break soon...
@mabeel993 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can try to dedicate one portion of your drawing time to the fundamentals, it doesn't have to be a lot of time, maybe 20/15 minutes or less if you don't have that much time, and eventually add more space to practice the fundamentals. It's better to do a little than to not do anything at all. I like portraits, for example, so i started drawing the head, just trying to get the basic shapes, so I can get used to the process. Maybe you can try to have one gesture study done or one head study done and then add more with time. I didn't have the motivation to make studies (or draw at all) because I was afraid of them turning out bad and I wanted to see development on each session, but the truth is that the more pressure you put on yourself the less work you get done. Making awful drawings it's part of the process.

I don't think people are asking about how long because they think fast makes a good artist. We wanna get a time gauge on how long it will take to achieve our goals, even a rough estimate. Uncertainty breeds a lot of anxiety and self esteem issues. Some people may also be starting relatively late and want to know how much of their busy lives they need to set aside to practice.
@egusisoup1826 Жыл бұрын
Exactly this. Imagine wanting to become an engineer, and your college instructor said something along the lines of "don't worry about how long it takes, because being fast doesn't make a good engineer". I get where he's coming from, but it's a strawman used to avoid the heart of the question. People want rough gauges on how long it takes people to achieve proficiency in a skill so they can plan their practice time in their already busy schedules (especially as adults). It helps people put in perspective if their skill level is explained by their lack of time practicing, or if their level is below the expected given how much they have practiced, which would allow them to realize they may need to take a different approach. This is why understanding your timeline is often an important pillar for effective goal setting. All of the skills I've been able to learn allow me to give others estimates on how long they would need to study to achieve different levels of proficiency, and what levels are reserved for masters in the field, but when it comes to drawing in particular, many have this idea that because everyone is different and art is personal, it is impossible to do something similar, which I think is unfortunate.

Learning is not easy for some things. Just because I have the book and read the concepts, does not mean I understand the concepts or am doing them right. That's why mentors and teachers and communities that give feedback exists. Sometimes concepts are pretty advanced and it MIGHT take weeks or months to figure out a concept (ellipses for example) at least for me. But I guess patience is the key because I believe there are just things you cant see until you get to a certain point and that's when your brain clicks. My biggest problem is getting stuck on a problem when learning from books and that takes a huge amount of time from me.
