A breakfast “egg-splosion“💥 creates an “egg-celent” “egg-scuse” to tackle a tough ASL lesson topic for new signers:
Lexicalized Fingerspelling! 🥳
❓What is it❓
The fingerspelling of a word evolves to become its own sign.
Lexicalized means borrowed. So think of Lexicalized fingerspelling as a “borrowed vocabulary” from English
❓Key features❓
A wrist flick, a circular motion, letters not fully formed, skipped letters…
Or some wonky funky combo of those features 🤪
❓Why❓
IDK… Every language has its quirks. Get over it 😛
👉 In this example, I break down the Lexicalized fingerspelling sign for BURN.
Note the wrist flick!
🙋🏻♀️ If there is an actual open flame, it’s appropriate to sign BURN with the flame/fire sign (shown in this video).
For non-open-flame purposes, it is common to use the Lexicalized fingerspelling sign version of BURN.
