Holy snot these videos are amazing. I'm a woman, so I figured that me not being able to reach frets was just because I have smaller hands and it would never get better. Now I realize I had a fucking vice grip on the neck and was contorting my hand in a totally unnatural way. You're the best.

Just gonna say, even after years of bass playing, I still come back to this video or videos like it every once in a while to make sure i still have the fundamentals down. I might not be the best bass player out there, so when i see others playing things i could only dream of with a different grip on the neck than what i have, it can make me nervous. Coming back to these videos to remember i learned it the right way is always helpful, and that if i keep at it i will be able to play just as good as any bassist out there.

I loved this tutorial as I realized that using the thumb as a pivot makes it incredibly easy to move the fingers along the fret board horizontally without much stress and to a greater distance without moving the thumb. I loved this technique as it will definitely change my fretting speed along the fret board. Once again,thanks a lot !

I love these videos, i do have a question for someone out there.... normally do you feel you have to apply more pressure for fret-less basses, compared to basses with frets?
@JamesDavisakaRemguy4 жыл бұрын
What I've done in the past is skip a step and just decrease pressure with my finger halfway between two frets until I get buzzing and then just slide the finger up against the fret. You don't really have to repeat the exercise at the fret itself. The whole idea is to use as little pressure as possible and still get a clean sound - and it's absolutely amazing how little pressure is necessary. Also, for a slightly muted sound, I will sometimes let the pad of the fingertip ever so slightly overlap the fret, so it's sitting right on top, but with more pressure behind (the fret) than in front. This is tricky, and you probably can't play fast lines this way, but that muted retro sound isn't really for lightning-fast metal solos (see Billy Sheehan) anyway. Best of luck.

Hi! I only just discovered these tutorials and think they are clear, concise and definitely useful! Not sure if anyone has the same problem as I do, but when I use my middle, third or pinkie finger to fret, my fore finger tends to automatically stick out instead of laying onto the strings. I actually find it difficult to keep all my finger on an even plane when fretting. This happens especially when using the pinkie. Dunno if this is just lack of practice or i have weird digits... :-) Anyone else experience this too?

Great videos! Question: With electric guitars you fret in between the frets and with electric basses you fret on the actual strip? Or, should it be the same with both instruments? Thanks in advance! (anyone)
@guiltyspark14239 жыл бұрын
Doesn't make a difference, it all depends on what the players most comfortable with. If you want that Pink Floyd / Gary Moore high pitch perpetual sound then you would go with in between frets otherwise it doesn't matter.

I'm new to bass guitar and i went to guitar center and I started looking at bass guitars i pick one up and attempted to pluck a string and my hand just felt really tense. I feel like even after relaxing my hand I will end up being tense again and I feel like I won't be able to play for long periods of time. hey, first of all, i want to thank you for uploading these video's, yet i do have a question. i cant seem to get the accuracy right, i keep missing the frets, but i figured with enough practice this will go away, but my pinky hurts whenever i try to play with it, and when i try to relax i cant really pivot my fingers to press on the strings, so do you perhaps know why this is and how i can improve on it, maybe so itll hurt less? (ow before i forget, the pain is mainly in my knuckle, i think this comes from over-reaching, but im not sure)
@jezzard12310 жыл бұрын
Everything you said there will be fixed with practice. You have bad accuracy because you haven't worked up the muscle memory, maybe come up with some exercises where you play 4 frets (each one a different finger) then move to the string below, when you get to the last string shift so you start from the 4th fret and go up the fret board and shift again and go down, eventually doing the whole neck, i'm sorry if that didn't make much sense. With your hand and pinky hurting, it will get better the more you play, it hurts because you just aren't used to playing it and you need to get better strength which will come with playing.

@jackshepard807010 жыл бұрын
Sometimes strings will buzz even when your technique is correct and that is an indication that your bass needs a setup by someone knowledgeable such as a luthier. A setup involves adjusting the neck tension, bridge saddle height and intonation.
