Relaxation begins with breathing. When you sit in front of the piano, take a minute or two and look at the keys. Breath easily. Relax. The keys are your friends. They will do whatever you and your fingers tell them. You will make mistakes. Accept that fact. Don't let mistakes upset or worry you. Your playing WILL improve.End each practice session with some fun songs that you can play. Songs YOU enjoy. In time, you will see the piano as your "playground" and your breathing and hands will relax.

I APPRECIATE THE FREE LESSONS! I can read music, but I'm still a slave to the printed page. I watch your hand movements and listen to what you're saying carefully. Someday I'll be able to play boogie woogie, and maybe popular music in general, without being glued to exactly what's written down by somebody else. I want to create my own. PLEASE continue the lessons. Robert Kubota

+WildRoot When reading music it tells you where your hands-- each individual finger-- should be on the piano/keyboard. Learn some basic scales and how your fingers should move up and down the notes before you start learning any sort of music; that way you don't develop any improper playing. Fundamentals will help A LOT once you get started playing some beginner stuff.

I have been trying to play for 15 yrs now and I still can't play. I can play songs, some quite sophisticated, but I have so many holes in my playing. I thank you for making it accessible for me. Most teachers keep teaching the same things that will never get you to the point that you are playing and understanding what you are doing. I have watched three of your videos and I will continue until I am playing the blues. Thanks and would you show some exercises that r beneficial to playing.

Not sure about your question. But here goes: blues scale licks and runs can be played over major or minor chords. A minor chord can be played in a major chord progression to "blues the song up a bit", but that minor chord will have to resolve back to major. Changing the major chord to a minor chord changes the tone/mood of the song.

Hi and thanks for the lesson. My question is at 3:01/7:16 I don't understand how you get 1 4 and 6 on the f chord. This looks like you are hitting the black key. first. Is the 1,4,6 relating to whole and half step notes?
@homecookedblues8 жыл бұрын
Overall, the chord progression is I, IV, V. Individual chord prgression is C-F, F-Bb, G-C. The F-Bb works in this case because the actual scale that we're using is C-D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C. To make it easy, we just say, we're in the key of C withflatted 7th (Bb.) As we progress, we will flat the not only the 7th, and 3rd (for a minor chord) but other notes. If we didn't flat the 7th (Bb) in the key of C, we would have an over all sweet sound. We need to flat the 7th to get a rock and blues sound. Bb makes the C chord a dominant chord. OK, enough of the theory. Try this progression in other keys. Be sure to flat the 7th in the scale. EX: Key=G. F=the flatted 7th. Thanks for asking.

Hi! I'm a 3 years classically train piano player who will be taking a class in about a week and a 1/2 called "Jam Session" (blues and light rock). There will be other instrumentalists there. As the piano person there, do you know if normally the piano person only does rhythm or is there any melody involved? I'm guessing there is melody if they have me do a solo? I'm learning the blues chords at a quick rate so I don't feel lost in the class. Anything else I should practice? luv your videos!

On the second half of video 3, you change up the rift with your right hand and it sounds really good. How are you keeping count. With the fist part I can count 1-2-3-4 and follow along, but then in the second part it's very hard, I'm trying to count 1 an a -2 an a-3 an a-4 an a, and it's not coming out, am I counting right? And is their any tips that you could offer to help? Thank you for your time on making these videos I'm addicted :)
@homecookedblues9 жыл бұрын
jasonjjj27 good question. my best answer for today is this: left hand is King. left hand establishes the rhythm; 4/4, 3/4, shuffle, Latin style, whatever. right hand can play on the left hand beat, in-between, whatever - as long as it sounds like the groove you want to lay down. the change up I was doing was an instant improve and I didn't think too much about it. the left hand was playing a kind of shuffle beat and the right hand was playing a "complimentary" rhythm that if I had to repeat it exactly i'd have to think about it. I and other players will sometimes lay down tracks during an improv session and sometimes won't know what we did unless we listened to it a few times it, but it sounded good which is the important thing :)

I see, so I can make up a 12-bar blues progression for a tune in C out of either C7, F7, G7 or Cm7, Fm7, Gm7? I figured the C blues scale shares much fewer notes with C7, F7, G7 than with Cm7, Fm7, Gm7. I'm wondering why using major chords doesn't make a tune sound horribly dissonant. In other words, I wonder if playing a blues with all minor chords would be easier to improvise. Doesn't it take more skill to play all major chords and improvise on the blues scale?
@jasonjjj279 жыл бұрын
When doing this first lesson is it ok to use the 1-3-5 finger for the right hand the whole time instead of the 1-2-5 finger into the 1-3-5 ?

Hi question, if the key of the blues shuffle is in C why would the 4 of The IV chord, since it's not in the c major scale
@homecookedblues8 жыл бұрын
The notes in C major are: c,d,e,f,g,a,b. Diatonic harmony shows us that the Chords in Key of C are C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, B diminished. The I, IV, V chords in C major are C,F,G. We introduce the Bb to turn the C chord into a dominant chord which changes the sound of the C major into a different sound. Basically that is what Western music is all about. We start with the major keys and chords, and then change them for different sounds which is why we have dominant chords, minor chords, raised 5ths, diminished chords, and it goes on and on. The challenge of composing/improvising or playing music is knowing which chords and notes to use and which to leave out in any particlular song. Thanks for asking.

I don't get it, the way I've learnt chords is by counting keys (black and white). You say to do the 1-4-6 of a chord, now I assume that I only need to count the white keys. This works fine in C and G but not in F because there you use a black key. How should I interpret the numbers? Thanks!

WildRoot I don't totally understand your question. When it comes to playing chords or single notes you can use whatever finger(s) that work for you and also allows you to get to the next chord or single notes as smooth as you can. Also, you might want to look at my video on this channel regarding the number system I use. Video is called Learn Nashville Number System. Welcome to the this channel and to the world of blues piano improv.

homecookedblues Why can't the left pinky be 1 and the left thumb be 5, the same direction as the right hand fingers? Also this would be the same direction as an un-inverted C major triad, 135, not 531. The standard answer seems to be that everyone was taught to count the left pinky as 5. Would I cause problems If I told someone to count the left pinky as 1, the left ring finger as 2, the left thumb 5 etc? If my suggestion would be a problem, why?
