It's a beautiful language, I really would like to visit Bulgaria soon. I'm wondering, though, how much can Russian and Bulgarian speakers understand each other? It sounds much much closer to Russian than Polish or Czech sound to Russian. Also, can Serbs/Croats and Bulgarians understand each other very well? I already speak a little bit of Russian so that might help me to get started learning another Slavic language.

Bulgarian is close to Russian but harder to understand for a Russian than Serbian. Serbian is easier to understand but the vocabulary has less in common with Russian. Russian is the only Slavic language that is soft spoken while the Western and Southern Slavic languages sound hard and less refined to Russian ears.

Without getting political (which in the Balkans is basically impossible) I wonder how close Bulgarian is to Macedonian. I am language incompetent and have been married to a women from Ohrid for almost 20 years. Thinking of subscribing as there is really no course at all in Macedonian. I know they are not exact just from hearing a bit and looking at the not great Mondly app that has Bulgarian.
