Thanks a lot for the lessons. I have just back from Myanmar and fell in love with the people there. Burmese people are the most caring people in the world. I have to learn Burmese for sure as I want to talk to them in their own language. I was actually touched by the way they treated me there. I hope when I come back, no matter how developed the country is, the people still remain their purity and warmness.

Myanmar speakers can speak more tones,tunes,pronunciation than any other nations in the world.They can pronouce english,french,german,russian,japanese,chinese or any other languages by using their own language.For example,a korean or a thai can't pronounce french or german by using their own languages.It has universal versatile tongues and it can also bridge to any other tongues in the planet.I knew that after learning about 40 languages as a linguist.

This is very good, I am glad I found this; I have learned through global travels as an airline pilot and tourist over the past forty five years that it is always wise to know a few simple phrases in a country. I'm going to Myanmar next year, I've been fascinated by Myanmar (Burma) since in elementary school sixty years now, glad I'm finally going to go there. In school the names of South East Asian countries then were; Burma, Siam (Thailand), French Indo China (Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia). Learning some simple phrases is always a good thing. The people respect that and it shows respect for the people and their culture as well. What about hand gestures to avoid, any tips? For instance in Vietnam never touch a child's head in Thailand never sit with the bottom of your feet pointed towards another person, and never cross your first and index fingers (taboo). I believe English is spoken quite a bit in Myanmar too from the British influence and colonization; is that last statement correct?

+Borneoe Herbs There is no such thing as a standardized Romanization system in Burmese, therefore, we tried to reproduce the phonetic based on English pronunciation and trying to respect the original Burmese script as well. Even though you might find it difficult at first, once you understand how it works, the romanization can be useful to learn how to speak.
@Gewaldro
@Gewaldro 8 жыл бұрын
+Burmese Lesson I think it is necessary to learn the actual writing system. I am learning Hindi and the Burmese script is a Brahmi script just like Devanagari, used for writing Hindi. The writing system is very logical to use and usually represents the sounds of a language more accurately than the Latin alphabet.

Hi Swe, My name is De from Viet Nam. Your lessons are very interesting for those want to learn Burmese. Today I have a question: I am told that Burmese language is basically a tonal monosyllabic language. Being a Vietnamese I am very familiar with tonal language, but for monosyllabic I do not fully know if your language is. For example the sentence say when greeting in your language is "nay kaung ye la". Can I break it up into each word with its meaning to know the meaning of the whole or group of words (for example the meaning of nay, then kaung, then ye, then la? each word has a meaning). Similar to this, how do you say about tway ya ta wan tha pa te? Can you break it up in to each single word meaning? Or would I better learn its meaning in group of word, for exampel /tway ya ta/ , /wan tha pa te/? Thank you.

You can break some words which served as a verb like Twae=meet And ya and ta are like particles so it only works when you combine Nay kaung=feel well Ye is a particle and lar=? Like Japanese we don't have question mark instead we put lar in question sentence.
@mammchannel1365
@mammchannel1365 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, why not? Some words can be split up, for example as you said, nay-kaung-ye-la (nay-kaung means good or alright or well relating to health, and ye-la is a question form in Burmese. So, it turned out as “How are you?”

Thanks for your good comments :) We learn English since primary school but many cannot speak correctly yet, that's why many English teaching school open nowadays, for young professionals to be able to connect and communicate in a global world. Even if foreign investment is coming to Myanmar, I think majority of business owners and managers are still Burmese, so we connect with them in Burmese hehe. But speaking English is certainly an essential skill to get a job with responsibility.

I think it would be much better when we learn a new language, we start from the sounds or phonetics, as well as the phonology. We need to know whether it is a tonal language or not. What vowels or consonants are close to our native language and what are new, and how to produce them. These are very important before we start learning about some useful expressions in daily conversation.

Is there a way for me to remember my old language? As a kid I was really good at writing in Burmese and I can even read in Burmese. As I move to a foreign country and gotten older my old language started to deteriorate. I can still watch a Burmese movie and understand everything they say and I can still speak the language. The problem is I can't read and write in Burmese anymore. Do I need to learn from scratch all over again or can it all comeback again. Is there a way to trigger all those memories in instant?

0:07 - 0:11 This is very hard. I was trying to set the video to 0.75 speed (or slower) and it appears that the phonetic words differ from what the mentor had been pronouncing. The word for example: Kyo-so pa te (pronounce something like "Cho-so va le"). Other one is: Min-ga la pa (pronounced like "Minga la wa? Others pronounce like Minga la ba.") "Kya'ma to" (misheard like english "Tomorrow")

Okay, Burmese for "Glad to meet you" sounds nothing like the romanized phrase written above the video :) I think Burmese is beautiful, but there are sounds people from the West are not familiar with. But I see you have at least one other video about the tones. Maybe I should start with that.
@Burmeselesson1
@Burmeselesson1 7 жыл бұрын
Sounds can be indeed unusual but we have a video here to help with the pronunciation of consonants, as well as tones in Burmese, that would be a great start indeed. If you want to dive into more complex pronunciations such as what we romanized as "ky" or check how vowels sound, you could go to our website www.burmeselesson.com Hope we can help you to grasp the proper pronunciation of Burmese :)

What is the Mon language? I've seen various videos of it being spoken. It uses the Burmese alphabet, but it sounds similar to Khmai.
@Burmeselesson1

Mon language is an ethnic language spoken in Mon State of Myanmar mostly, by Mon people who are one of the most ancient ethnic group present in Myanmar, they have been living in the area before Bamar ethnic (Burmese) came to Myanmar, supposedly back from the 5th century. Mon language is using an alphabet that is very similar to Burmese, but it is not exactly the same. However, the language sound different as you noticed.
@YummYakitori
@YummYakitori 7 жыл бұрын
Joshua Ransome You are right. The Mon language belongs to the Austro-Asiatic language family together with Khmer, Munda & Vietnamese, and they are the indigenous people of Southeast Asia. The Burmese people who speak a Sino-Tibetan language arrived in modern-day Myanmar from somewhere further north, probably Tibet or China.

I spoke burmese until I was almost 5 - but then my parents moved back to first Germany and then south africa. since I had to learn english I never spoke burmese again and don't know one word. Can I revive it with hypnosis?

Wow! That's a good question, but you probably have better ability to learn it than other people. Maybe try to expose yourself to more Burmese and listen to a few lessons and some things might come back. I am really not sure about hypnosis though, you can try.
