Very interesting your explanation of "Linking" words! We have the same feature in French, it's called "une Liaison". For instance, to say "Plusieurs oiseaux" (which means "several birds"), we would pronounce the "s" sound between "plusieurs" and "oiseaux" (and blend the two words as you explained) even if the "s" sound is silent when "plusieurs" is pronounced alone (which makes the rule even trickier). This is in part what makes French so difficult to understand for foreigners.

Most languages do, which is, I think, one of the reasons why it's easier to learn to talk without reading first. When you learn separate words on paper, you expect to hear them in full, on their own, and that's rare

@EatSleepDreamEnglish
@EatSleepDreamEnglish 4 жыл бұрын
Right! I feel like some teachers can be too prescriptive about what accent you should/shouldn't have and it's often based on their own prejudices. More to the point I think the best motivation for any student learning English should be to expose themselves to as many accents as possible because that's what they come across in every day life.
@Cristinglish
@Cristinglish 4 жыл бұрын
@@EatSleepDreamEnglish I couldn't agree more with you! Now that I'm teaching I'm providingy students with a wide range of different accents and I always show them them that x or y pronunciation is more British/American, and tell them to simply use the one they feel more comfortable when speaking, the aim is to be able to communicate with people, having an accent doesn't determine your fluency.

As an American, Daniel Radcliffe's "uptalk" seems distinctively English. I can't think of any Americans who speak that way. And he was talking that way when he was doing his first movie, and so was Emma Watson. When I visited England yonks ago, I noticed it right off. I found it charming but definitely foreign.

hey. I have heard A LOT of people using the “tap T” all across England (no matter what accent, scouse, london, manc, geordie, etc.) I don’t think it’s got anything to do with exposure to American English. Brits have started to use it since a long time ago. You use it at times as well

Ahhhhhh, thank you!! Great information! Coming from America, the true T and the uptalk intonation were very interesting to me- most of us pronounce words with t's in the middle like "wader" and such, because it's just less work than going "waTer". (Very interesting to hear that does get adopted by Brits exposed to Americian speech) For me I remember being at home watching some commericial and the actor onscreen pronounced every single T with a true t, and I found it really strange. It was overwhelming to *my* ears to hear her say every word like "kiTTen" over and over when I would say something like "ki {Glottal stop?} en". Course if you speak like this, it's beautiful, it was just totally different from what I was used to XD. With Uptalk I realized that conversationally- Americans DO do this all the time, took me a second because at first I thought "huh, isn't that reserved for questions?", but if I were to have a casual talk with friends I 100% use it too, didn't even realize XD. FRICK I love accents and speech!

the flapped 'T' is actually quite common throughout the world. even in the u.k. i've heard it quite alot i've even heard 'RP' speakers use it JOHN CLEESE does it on a regular basis. and, of course, extremely common in canada, oz and new zealand too. in fact i think of the 3 'T' sounds you mention in this vid the flapped 'T' is the most common of them all. the glottal 'T' is the rarest you really don't hear that outside the u.k. except in words like 'button' bu even then it's not as starkly noticeable as it is in alot of cases in the british isles (irish republic they use it quite alot too). i tend to think the flapped 'T' is so common because it's simply less effort to say it that way than the other two. australians also say 'budder' (butter) and 'wadder' (water) and ive always wondered why that is i really don't think it's down to american influence. you'd expect australians to do more of the other two 'T's since the accent is so much closer to an english accent but it seems like they never do it's almost always flapped. btw, the flapped 'T' is similar to a 'D' sound but not identical. 'D' as in 'dog' is said with much more emphasis than the flapped 'T'.

Do you think that as an American, it’s possible I’ve picked up some English ways of saying things because even from a young age I was watching English shows, movies (grew up on Monty Python) and interviews with English musicians (considering some of my favorite bands are the Beatles, Kinks, Oasis and Radiohead). I mean I’m 32 now and can remember being exposed to a lot of different English accents as early as 6 or 7.

I speak with Contemporary R.P and have done for about 10 years I’m 18 years old now but I realised my accent was changing from an early age ( I was about 8 years old i think) . I also pronounce the T sound in 3 ways , I use the Pronounced T I will sometimes use the glottal T and sometimes I use the Flap T which is the /d/ sound

what accent did you have originally and did you make a conscious effort to switch to 'RP'? if so why? i'm curious.

@@lucindawinehouse2002 no way i'm yankee but i lived in urmston fer 2 1/2 years. i'm not english so i don't hold the same prejudices but i don't think any of the accents in that area are ugly i quite like them even scouse which i know alot of people hate. and quite charming on females even if a bit masculine. evryone in that area really liked my accent too (they don't get alot of yankees in that area so i was a novelty) so as far as that went all worked out well (my gf at the time could listen to me talk fer hours). fer all concerned. lol. i'd be interested to hear yer accent but it looks like u don't post anythang. even though you switched to 'RP' i'd guess there's still some manchester mixed in?

@@NoirL.A. Not really It’s been 10 years since I’ve been speaking like this so my Manchester accent is the one I’m starting to lose

over here the full on 'T' sound is basically only at the start of the word or in a few words like "detect" other than that the "flapped T' is absolutely the norm in all yankee accents. there's a slight tiny glottal stop in words like "button" but the big glottal stop in words like "butter" des not exist at all. i like the glottal stop in u.k. / irish accents but i would never use it myself. even the time i lived in the u.k. i never used it once. do you have any examples of yer accent? i'd be interested to hear it. plus i know all over england no matter where you are there is a certain number of people who speak RP it's not just im the south.

Please make a video about Karl Urban. He's from New Zealand, so he speaks in kiwi accent, but I'm jolly curious about his interpretation of Billy Butcher in The Boys, where his character is a cockney. I reckon he does the cockney accent so well, but dunno about the real facts of that.

Did you watch Game of Thrones? I think that would make a great example of using accents to use in your videos, btw I really love your lessons, they're awesome 🥰

In modern RP, why is there a difference in pronunciation between the A in "bath" and the A in "acting"? I was just about to say uptalking is annoying before you mentioned it and I'm American. It's especially so when you meet someone who has that kind of cadence that is "sing-songy".

What kind of accent is yours? Yours sounds just like Daniel’s to me but maybe that’s just an American viewpoint

This is exactly how I speak. Sometimes I pronounce my Ts and other times I don't, it just depends on how fast I'm talking lol
