Thank you very much for explaining the difference between 'so' and 'so that' when both are used in a similarly constructed sentence. I had problems understanding the whole thing because I didn't exactly know how to differentiate them. I thought their differences lie on their use, not much on the meaning each of them convey, but I was wrong. It's actually the other way around! I tried looking for a great answers, opened every website that offered various, intelligent but often incomprehensible answers, but I end up not getting how to distinguish them. This is the only explanation that made perfect sense for me. The tutor went on very simple in highlighting the differences between 'so' and 'so that'. Thanks to him, I now have an answer to my student who's been bugging me about this! Thank you!

Clear and elaborate explanation on how to use them correctly! Great! So, basically, "so" in "so that" is an adverb that it can not be omitted for grammar reasons, right? But, according to the definition from Yahoo dictionary (the Taiwan version) , that as a conjunction has the meaning of the adverb conjunction, "so that", so that I can leave "that" and omit so to represent the same meaning. Besides my previous explanation about the abbreviation of so in the phrase, so that, another definition that can support my theory is the definition explanation from my Wen Shin's Modern English Chinese Dictionary that "(so) that" is used for guiding an adverb clause followed up to show the purpose like what you say in the video. An example from the dictionary about this is that We eat (so) that we may live. Therefore, the conclusion is that so that as an adverb conjunction to show the meaning of the purpose for the previous clause can be omitted for either word and show the same meaning grammatically!

so (adjective or adverb) that and so as a conjunction are commonly misused because the"so" as a conjunction acts as an adverb clause, specifically as a consequence clause, and the "so (adjt or adverb) that" acts as concessive clause, and those two types of clauses are interchangeable. I can change the concessive clause into a consequence clause without the original meaning, and so on. If people who misuse these two structures studied syntax, they wouldn't confuse each other. That's why syntax is so important. People often think syntax is useless

Great explanation and thanks for the content. 1. Can I use "so" in a formal conversation/emails or in my job? 2. For "so" as a consequence, I can use other words, like therefore, consequently, etc. Is there any other way to say "so that" ? Thanks!!
@dulaannako31922 жыл бұрын
1. Yes, you can use it but according to my reading and writing skills teacher, it's not good to use "so" as an quantifier because it makes your composition weaker. 2. Yes, there is. The conjunction word "so that" is just similar to other words like "to", "in order to", "so as to" and etc. These transitional words express the purpose of what you said before. Additionally, it only depends on how you use it. Ex: 1. I learn how to pose on photoshoots, "so that" they'll hire me as a Model of their brand. 2. I learn how to pose on photoshoots, "in order to" become a model of their Brand.
