Get my FREE Sounds of American English Cheat Sheet: rachelsenglish...
You will learn English and increase your vocabulary with this pronunciation-focused video on American English!
Because English isn’t phonetic, students need to devote time and energy to mastering the pronunciation of individual words. If you want to have confident, expressive conversations with native speakers you need to learn English with that specific goal in mind.
Your English “book knowledge” needs to be constantly supplemented with real-world/real-conversation practice. To learn English in a vacuum-without pushing yourself to be able to speak like a native speaker-is such an easily-corrected mistake. I’ll show you the way!
If you learn English without giving sufficient focus to pronunciation you will gain fluency but not conversational fluency.
As you increase your English vocabulary it’s important to make sure that you’re fully conversational with the most common English words.
This necessitates that you learn English with a big commitment to pronunciation.
That’s why I’ve created this series of 10 videos on the 100 most common English words!
If you truly take in this content and master it you’ll be far ahead of most students that are attempting to learn English.
Presented here are the 51st through 60th most common English words. My advice is to spend as much time as necessary with the video. Pause, repeat and re-watch as many times as necessary. That’s the kind of commitment required to become absolutely fluent in spoken English.
If you take the time to do the work, you can use this video to gain 100% confidence in the way you pronounce the following words:
When
Make
Can
Like
Time
No
Just
Him
No
Take
These 10 words make up a huge percentage of the words spoken in the English language.
Think about it this way if you’re able to master the real, actual spoken English pronunciation of the 100 words in this series, your confidence will skyrocket and you’ll sound more and more (and more!) like a native English speaker!
It’s incredibly difficult to learn English but you can do it!!!

Lets take two words Paragraph and Parameter and both of them I guess, have 3 syllables. However in the first case, we stress on the first syllable i.e. "paaa.ra.graph" and in the second case we stress on the second syllable "pa.raaaa.meter". So there is no generic rule for the 3 syllable words? Can you please explain why there is such difference?
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! English is not a phonetic language, so there really aren't rules based on number of syllables. This can be frustrating, but over time you'll become more familiar with enough vocabulary to feel more confident. Also, the word 'parameter' is actually four syllables: 'pa-ra-me-ter'.

Hi Rachel, Quick question: I got the impression that the T in the words "left" and "soft" is realized as a true T and never as a glottal stop. Am I right? (also I think that sometimes in these words, the speakers completely drop the T, but as I said it's not a stop T)? What do you think? Thanks for your great videos!!! J.

Thank you Rachel for this video. I have a question about the indefinite article "A" sometimes I hear americans pronounce it - in a sentence, before a word - like "eɪ" and sometimes pronounced like "Ə", is there a rule. I Know that if "a" is followed by a word starting with a vowel it becomes "an", it's not what I meant by my question, my question is only about "A" can one pronounce it in two different ways before a word. Thank you Rachel for your time.
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, you will hear this both ways and you can use either one. However, I will say, it is more common to use the reduced schwa version of this word, since 'a' will almost always be unstressed.

The more difficult words for me are: (but, butt) (beach, bitch) (cheap, ship) (party, patty) y muchas mas palabras que se peonuncian parecido. Cuando yo pronuncio estas palabras se rien de mi, sobretodo en la palabra "beach" la pronuncio como la otra y por mas que intento me sale igual. Segun yo las pronuncio diferente pero ellos la escuchan igual y por eso soy un desastre para pronunciar las palabras que son parecidas en ingles!
