I've noticed some similarity: yhdeltä = at one but yhdeksän = nine; also kahdelta = at two but kahdeksan = eight. Is this just a coincidence or there is really some correlation here? Because I find it a bit confusing to be honest, I hear "yhdeltä" and I think "that means at nine!", then I realize it doesn't! :D BTW, many thanks for this channel and for the job you're doing here, it's very precious for Finnish language fan like me! :D Cheers!

Agnieszka Katzy Thanks for this interesting question! I looked into this and it seems ”kaksi” and ”kahdeksan” may indeed have originated from the same ancient word and evolved into two different numbers. Sama goes for ”yksi” and ”yhdeksän”. In some case forms there is only a difference of a few letters in these words, so I can definitely understand the confusion! :-)

@@FinnishWithAnna Kaksi is two and kahdeksan is two before ten, i.e. eight. Yksi is one and yhdeksän is one before ten, i.e. nine. That is the way I see it! kiitos kaikesta työstä jota teet näissä videoissa, hei hei

From what I've understood in Proto-Finno-Ugric the numbers eight and nine were thought as "two-minus-ten" and "one-minus-ten". Those being eight=kakteksa and nine=ykteksa. Number one is "ykte" and number two is "kakta". "e" means a negative verb. So the number "kakteksa" would be like "two-away-from-ten" and "ykteksa" would be "one-away-from-ten". Another possibility is that the "teksa" part is a loan from Proto-Indo-European, but the number construct would still be the same "ten-minus-one" and "ten-minus-two"

i'm a portuguese native speaker, and in finnish, you have something a little bit similar from portuguese about the hours, like in 'kello on puoli kolme' its almost equivalent to the: "Half an hour to 3:00" (its not the exactly translation but idk how to really translate that hahaha) and thank u so much! you're helping me so much

Ah, I see that Finnish is the same as German, Czech, Russian: 14:30 = half-three! Whereas English is: half-two or two-thirty.

@FinnishWithAnna
@FinnishWithAnna 3 жыл бұрын
You can say that, but in some contexts you may need to elaborate if you mean during the day or at night. You can use the words "yöllä" (at night) or "päivällä" (during the day). Using the 24-hour clock eliminates the need to elaborate further.

Hi ! Welcome back :D, hope you enjoyed your vacation, anyhow I have a question It's a little bit digressive but I am curious to know how people in the far north were able to tell time, count days and even telling months apart while being deprived of the sun for an extended period of time without modern means.
@FinnishWithAnna
@FinnishWithAnna 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, happy to be back! You asked an interesting question. I don't think the concept of time was as important in the old days as it is now. They followed natural signs like sunset and sundown and the behavior of animals. Also church bells were an important mark of time; vicars had clocks. Even before clocks people probably had some ways to tell time even in Lapland's darkness; for example burning a splinter of wood usually took a certain time. But like I said, exact time wasn't that important. You did your work even in full kaamos (darkness) and when light started coming back, it gave the days a more defined frame.

@@FinnishWithAnna You mentioned church bells, how did the church know when to ring the bell ?
@FinnishWithAnna
@FinnishWithAnna 5 жыл бұрын
@@cogofknowledge6142 The vicars were often more well off than the "common" people, and they had clocks. Town halls also often had a clock from around the 17th century onward. How they knew when to ring the bells in remote areas and before clocks became widespread I don't know. Christianity was brought to Finland in waves around the 11th , 12th and 13th centuries. Interesting topic!
