Moi Katja! I'm an English professor in the US, and I just want to say that you are an excellent teacher (no matter if your fields of study were psychology and neuroscience, not linguistics--you're great at this too). I've only recently come upon your channel, but I have been catching up quickly. Your warm, approachable, funny and practical videos have been very helpful to me. Finnish is so very different from any of the other languages I've studied over the years, so I can use all the help I can find, and this channel provides lots of it. Kiitos paljon!

When I saw "nous" I immediately thought of the French word for "us". Sometimes, knowing another language can cause confusion as you have to re-translate the word. For instance, "gift" in English means "present" (like a birthday present) but in German it means "poison". For me, Finnish is a tongue-twister language. Some Finnish words like "yö" is a sound I would only make if I were holding my stomach sick, about to throw up. It is not part of the natural vocabulary of English.
@hyhhy2 жыл бұрын
Finnish speakers often say "yök" (or "yäk") when they feel like throwing up. So in fact we think "yö" sounds like that too. There is also the verb "yököttää", meaning "to feel like throwing up", and "yökätä", meaning "to retch".

Kiitos paljon! :) I am wondering why "juosta" turns to "minä juoksen" - why does "k" appear? and I like your University of Singapore t-shirt!

Well, juosta is an exception haha! And then also it has the KPT rule. You can read more here: www.studyfinnish.com/grammar/verb-types/verb-type-3/#olla-example
