Tommy Shannon Smoothe as Silk. Who better than to team up with SRV? What a winning combo. Two blues master players. Add to the mix Chris Layton and you're talking one of the best blues combos I've ever heard.

Great lesson Greg! I'm doing a deeper dive in to the Blues and this lesson is so timely for me personally. You do a great job teaching. I first caught you on the Become A Bassist Summit you were on recently. Sure glad I caught you during your lesson/seminar there.

Thanks Kevin and I'm so pleased you like the lesson. I have always love the Blues and have played in various Blues outfits over the last 25 or so years. I'm on my own Blues 'deep dive' again and still learning! I find the history really interesting, especially as to do this I also have to learn more about American geography and history to really try to understand the Blues. Watch this space as I will be covering more Blues. Also, you can let me know if there is anything in particular that you would benefit from in another video lesson.

Dude, love your custom Tele bass and sound. I hate the huge pickguard, very tasty telecaster pickguard you did there, well done!
@GregsBassShed
@GregsBassShed 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers! Yeah I don't like those massive tele bass pickguards either, and I wanted to have more of the body finish showing. I used a finishing kit from a company called Wudtone, and that was easy to use for a novice builder like me!! I've got a Bare Knuckle pickup on it and flatwounds. It's definitely unique!!
@silencedones4421
@silencedones4421 Жыл бұрын
@@GregsBassShedhave you tried Rotosounds 77 flatwounds? When I first started using them I hated them but after about a month of playing with them and they broke in (when new they are a bit rabid but mellow out) they quickly became my favorite string. Great versatility from blues to speed metal as you can get the roundwound sound or flatwounds.

Hi Dusty, try headphones or decent speakers and you’ll hear the bass loud and clear. Bass is not great on small speakers so if you are trying to watch this lesson on your phone or iPad speakers, you won’t have much luck!

Hi Greg. Do you have an entire tab for Pride and Joy? I've looked at lots of tabs online, but not one matches the part you played. Yours etcetera, Michael J Blair.
@GregsBassShed
@GregsBassShed 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael I cover Pride & Joy in my 'Walk The Blues' video course but I haven't made up the entire transcription yet. I might well do an individual cover of this with the PDF in the future. I must admit that I didn't use to play this exact Tommy Shannon part when I covered the song with a Blues band a few years ago. But it's well worth learning.

I think I have a pretty bulletproof way to transcribe bass lines. I use an app named Moises to isolate the bassline of a song, then export it to an MP3. I then use the Amazing Slow Downer app to slow the tempo while pushing it up an octave, you can slow down to as slow as 25%. From there I use a guitar to play along, as now it's more like a guitar line. If you hit a bad note, you hear it right away. It is pretty deadly.

@GregsBassShed 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ross, great tune isn't it. But where can you hear the 5 beats? Sounds like a clear 4/4 to me, although maybe the intro is causing you a bit of confusion? It would make a good full-length lesson.
@uwrossl
@uwrossl 2 жыл бұрын
@@GregsBassShed Hey Greg! Thanks for the response. Yes...should have been more clear....The intro sounds to me like it's in 5/4 with the extra pulse. Seems to then fall into standard 4/4 from there. Could be wrong and maybe there's something else throwing me off a bit in the intro. Thx Again...
@GregsBassShed
@GregsBassShed 2 жыл бұрын
@@uwrossl the intro is definitely complex rhythmically. But I hear it in 4/4 time. You have 2 bars of bass, then guitar joins at bar 3 and then drums join at bar 5. If you count through it like that, the intro is a tidy 8 bars of 4/4 time.
@uwrossl
@uwrossl 2 жыл бұрын
@@GregsBassShed Right on! I'll dive back into it. Thanks so much for your time and hope to see a full play through somewhere down the line! Love Tommy Shannon. The combo you're doing of lesson and then separate play through is some of if not the best and most complete bass content on KZbin.
