Great advice on watching your partner field the serve! I did it for the first time today and it made all the difference. It allowed me to gauge the difficulty of the serve and the strength or weakness of my partner’s return. Before I would always crowd the net and get destroyed when my partner had a weak return. Now I can adjust and position myself for a smarter play.

Lots of great stuff here. I'm not fully convinced about the idea that it's always best to watch your partner for as long as it's done in the first point of this video. There are some solid reasons given for watching your partner's return given here, yet there are some important offensive advantages for not watching your partner or for watching your partner to a certain point. The important thing to realize is that when done purposefully, both approaches can give distinct advantages. I still lean a bit in the direction that only watching your partner to the point that it's known where the serve is going is plenty. I want to turn my attention to the opponent's position and response to the return as soon as possible. For me, watching my partner's return go by me is unnecessary and it sacrifices the benefits of purposefully watching my opponents respond to my partner's return off of his paddle. Again, fantastic content here! Thanks for the wonderfully helpful videos.
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. All pros watch the return. Remember, your opponents have to let the ball bounce, so there’s no reason to keep your eyes on your opponents until they hit the ball.

great video. especially liked the emphasis on the players moving together on both sides. @12:05 in, do you think kyle may have been a step or two deep? Seems like he’s having to reach and had he been closer to the NVZ line could have made a more aggressive shot to attack the line. Was his “back from line” position a consideration in hitting to him? thx!

Caden is very offensive at the net, so any lifted dink, will be attacked right at Kyle. In this scenario, Kyle gives himself some extra reaction time, just in case Craig pops it up.

Love the break down! At 9:05 since the white shirt player on our right just executed a good drop why doesn't his partner just run straight to the Kitchen line instead of a split stop in the transition zone?
@BrionesPickleball

Because this is what high level players do. Most players that sprint up to the line without stopping can easily get caught by higher level player’s attacks. Also, when you are balanced, you can explode to attack when necessary.

It could have been, but if you look at it real time, it wasn’t that slow of an attack. Knowing Pesa, he was just trying to shove it to an uncomfortable position to find a pop up, which he did.

It’s always a lot harder to slice down the line and is more risky. The easier shot (most of the time) is cross court.

to be fair, the one returning with a slice chose the wrong return shot when pesa was advancing to the front. instead of slicing that return to the middle he should have gone for a hard topspin to scorhers' right side of court which would have been also a shot down the sideline, and the position was actually advantageous to do it. somehow the slice was chosen and the initiative was lost even a hard return to pesa's side would have been a good shot because he was moving and returning when he was running would have been harder? my opinion anyway and please educate me thanks
@BrionesPickleball
@BrionesPickleball Жыл бұрын
At higher levels sometimes it’s tactical and using your strengths over going for “a shot”. Craig doesn’t typically drive the ball on his BH side, and he has a very reliable drop to get him to the NVZ. This is a smart shot choice. Depending on what shots are in your arsenal, you must make good decisions on the fly. An amateur here may choose to drive it down the line, and make an error to the net or hit it wide.

Wow, pickleball looks like a dance in slo-mo, everyone in sync, no-music but slow-mo makes it look like they are moving to something.

For beginners, returning the serve on the run is not ideal. I see too many beginners with bad service returns if their feet are not set. Try to have both feet firmly grounded whenever possible.

IMHO I would enjoy your videos more if you were to pick 10 exchanges within a game and break them as offensive plays, defensive, and what is important to consider.

I tried to watch this. I really wanted to like it. While I can appreciate the intention to slow things down and get into the details, this is--for me, anyway--way to slow. I don't think we need to see the same backhand dink 25 times--really, I counted! So please keep making videos, but please restrain yourselves from going into such excruciating and needless detail.

Love the breakdowns, hate the loops. Sorry but they make me nauseous.
