Thanks for the tutorial. I am a complete noob when it comes to designing in CAD so It would help me tremendously if when you say something like "I will delete that" you add "by pressing this and this key" or whatever it is. Same for resize by clicking this button while pressing that. Since this is an absolute beginners tutorial I would imagine it could be helpful for more than even me. Thanks again for the content!

I agree that they are a little speedy but I am happy to pause and replay. I am also forced to think through and make my mistakes. I am new to CAD and want to use it for wood working. For example, making 2D casts for woodturnings of bowls or mallots, etc..and some 3D stuff for table, bookshelves or other more complex designs whereby I can play with the angles and staging in the software prior to losing a lot of time and money on making mockups. Thanks for these tutorials

Using Constraints is going to make my life designing RC Aircraft much simpler. I've never used a CAD Program before just some very basic 3D Modeling in Blender 3D. The Tutorials are very helpful.

It seems that in FreeCAD 0.18 there is a functionality called "Avoid redundant auto constraints" which is toggled active by default. This makes the example at 3:10 difficult to follow. You have to go to the Tasks side-pane, and under "Edit tasks" toggle off the option "Avoid redundant auto constraints". Hope this helps someone!

I had the issue of the auto constraints not working properly, like a lot of others seems to. I opened the edit controls tab (which is available when in editing the sketch) and unchecked then checked the "avoid redundant auto constraints" and/or "auto constraints" box. It now does the constraint lines automatically he is talking about.

So you can't set a line to be a certain distance, you have to select the star and end points and then define the distance between them. Feels like a workaround, but I suppose you get used to it after a while.

Sigh, this is why I gave up trying to learn these various CAD programs, all the tutorials wiz through it so fast and they are obviously pressing keys and clicking things they aren't explaining. I tried this example and can't get anything like what he is doing. For example, he draws a complete box, then somehow "deletes" the top line...how did you do that?? Also, when he draws the arc and clicks the points, when he is done, somehow all the corners are "connected" as if the sketch is one "piece". I don't get that, when I draw it all out and click on a point on the corner to "wiggle" it around, all I get is a single point that's either one of the lines or the end of the arc...the lines and arc aren't "connected". Was hoping to learn this as all I want to do is make some "2x4's" and "2x6's" to design a simple work bench. Might just be quicker and easier to use a dang pencil, paper and a straight edge.

I agree that it's a bit tough to get used to the FC IDE. But to credit this tutorial, I watched this for the first time. Chris did start of by explaining Poly-lines, and then the two different arcs. The sketch starts of by using poly-lines to create a square. Then the top-horizontal line is selected and deleted.This is followed by a 3 point arc that is created by selecting the two top end points of the vertical lines. Auto-constraints can help. It's hard to see, but when you draw a vertical line, a small and hard to see Red vertical line appears next to your mouse pointer. If this line is visible it means your vertical line is at 90 degrees. This is helpful because you are already constraining a line by simply drawing it watchfully. Hope this helps.

But how do I specify a dimension for the diameter of a circle? I've been struggling with this (a 5 second operation in F360) for haf an hour. It should be obvious, but it isn'#t obvious to me. The only way I can do it is to draw a construction line, connect it to the circumference in two places, and specify a length constraint for it. Surely, there is a better way? I can see the dynamic update of "10.1R" (even though it's small and dark blue on slightly brighter blue) but it's a pig to get where I want it. Too larege/too small - what fun! I want to type in a value and BAM./ Get on with life.

Hi Christopher! Great tutorial, thanks. I tried setting constraints for something as simple as a rectangle and kept getting the error message: Datum 0,00 mm for the constraint with index 10 is invalid. Any ideas why that might be? Imagine you draw a rectangle, constrain the long side to 24mm, then it won't let you constrain the other to any dimension.. Hmm..
@thetuner33334 жыл бұрын
hello, I'm not Christopher but I hope I can be of help, that error usually appears to me when I have two contradictory constraints, in this case, looks like you placed a 0mm length and its not possible because of the constraint number 10, if you can't find it, at the left you should have a list with all the constraints on the sketch, look for the index number(in this case 10) and when you click on it it should appear highlighted in green and then you can decide to modify or delete it.

In my opinion your tutorials are too hard to follow for many beginners. You rush through the examples too fast for me to follow, much less learn
@jessenortier4 жыл бұрын
I can imagine. Usually with tutorials they are based on some form of prior knowledge, and if that doesn't match between you and and the tutorial, it's going to be too hard or easy to follow. For me, coming from years of experience with 3ds Max, this is the perfect level. Just pause/skip back a few times and try out some stuff yourself, see if you can replicate what happens in the video and try to understand why it does so. You'll get there; this isn't super easy so don't expect to learn it within a day. Good luck!

Anyone else watches tutorials of software before downloading?
@marklimbrick4 жыл бұрын
Why not just take one simple step at a time on the workflow to gcode output? A rectangle sketch, extrude it, define a default tool, define default feed, generate a gcode... then with an overview it is possible to go back to each stage knowing how the process works with this software. ~Without a total brain overload trying to take in all the options? I've had to use so many different software programs, at work, at school, at home for free - I want to see the outline basic process first before designing anything other than a simple square blob. Imagine I teach you Urdu by starting with some classic poetry and you try and learn the symbols mean sounds, but arse backwards in front comes last, the vocabulary is mystical, the interpretation is not literal, but remember every detail of it as we progress.....if your head doesn't explode by the end of the first line then you are on a different level. Otherwise, this is a great tutorial. I want to come back to it, after I've done a basic tutorial.
