In learning Fusion 360 the battle is going to be won or lost based on understanding the concept of constraints. If Fusion 360 is not doing what you ask or is behaving in a way you do not understand, it is probably due to some constraint. If you are not familiar with the concept of constraints, your life in Fusion 360 will be a nightmare. Once you understand constraints, Fusion 360 will sing and dance for you. Hence, this video introduces you to the concept of constraints, and shows you how to make them your friends. This video has step by step instructions that will allow absolute beginners to understand Fusion 360 constraints.

Had a slight issue with the updated version and constraints not being in your 'Sketch Palette', found theyre literally in a menu at the top instead. Soon as I figured that out, I was right up there with you on everything you were teaching. Paul, you are absolute gold with this teaching. I know these videos are on youtube, but seriously, I'd love to even buy a dvd with all your lessons on there in case youtube does something wrong or something happens and they're inaccessible for whatever reason. Your lessons should be officially recognised/endorsed/advertised by Fusion 360, far greater than any teaching they've supplied!

I have been attempting to learn Fusion 360 through KZbin. there are some good people out there donating their time to help - i appreciate your efforts. Your channel was recommended by a colleague from my woodworking shop - glad they recommended this. Your discussion of constraints and the challenges they cause was right on and as you indicated just turned on a light bulb for me. I have heard others talk about constraints but they didn't go through the palette and share what each of them did for the sketch - yet alone what they would prevent me from doing - that recognition was awesome. Took me a few minutes because I have a newer version of Fusion 360 but once I got the differences in palette layout I was able to follow- thanks again - well done. I just subscribed and looking forward to going through your follow-on lessons.

Thanks Paul! At 68, I've tried to learn many cad packages over the year with extremely limited results. Now that I'm retired and a maker with a 3D printer, I decided I REALLY needed to make the plunge again. I've tried several Fusion 360 for beginners tutorials and ended up scratching my head and thinking I was too dumb to ever understand Fusion. Thankfully, I came across your provocatively entitled video and watched it AND THE LIGHT CLICKED ON! I didn't fold up like a cheap lawn chair, and I didn't run screaming like a girl. It actually started making SENSE! Thank you for your slow, 'constrained' teaching style that has given me hope that i will soon be able to do something more with Fusion 360 than just curse at it!

I tried to learn how to design stuff in Blender and it seemed very ad hoc and I had no idea how to get it do what I wanted. As someone who took a lot of math in college, as soon as you mentioned constraints in your first video, I knew Fusion 360 was going to much better align with my way of thinking. You did a great job showing me visually here that is indeed the case and Fusion 360 makes it possible to think about design mathematically. You must love this program seeing as you said you are a math teacher!

Wonderfully helpful tutorial: The ability to have the geometry stick to pre-defined symmetries as shapes are translated & re-sized is exactly what I need with engineering drawings & something I have not found in other software. I just love the way you teach, Paul! The way you speak and explain everything... I wish I had teachers like you back at school. By the way, it took me a while to realize why I couldn't see the two constraints at the origin point: things have changed in the UI of Fusion 360 since the recording of this video, and in version 2.0.18220 that I'm currently using there's this "Select Through" option which has to be un-ticked; only then I could see the two constraints when hovering with the mouse at the origin point. For those who face the same problem: click on the little arrow besides the 'SELECT' tool, navigate to 'Selection Filters' at the very bottom and then un-tick the 'Select Through' option.

Thanks Paul, you have been a real help. It's clear you are a professional instructor, knowing the importance of using repetition. You made effective use of repetition of previously covered commands and utilities in 360 by continuing to narrate what you were doing with them when demonstrating new features, like always narrating the drawing of a line or paragraph (covered in previous lessons) as you were executing constraints. This is important in the learning process because it cements the concept. I appreciate your work!
