Once again, thank you lots for your wonderful way of teaching, Michael. It's great and helpful and very efficient. I have a question though concerning the pronunciation of the letters T, K and P. Are they aspirated like in English or non-aspirated like in Spanish or Russian? When I am listening to you I hear both ways. Is it because of your English influence or maybe it depends on the position of those in the word? Will appreciate very much if you could clarify it
@thegreekacademy364310 ай бұрын
Wow! What a great ear! The aspiration of these consonants actually depends on the following vowel, which is why you're hearing both. I won't go into the whole thing here, but if you're interested in the topic, Harry Foundalis created a wonderful resource on Greek phonetics. If you master things like this, you'll wind up with quite the impressive accent. www.foundalis.com/lan/grphdetl.htm

Thank you for all your time! Δεν καταλαβαίνω τίποτα / I don't understand nothing, would that be correct?
@thegreekacademy3643 Жыл бұрын
It seems like you DO understand something😉, because you're exactly correct: Δεν καταλαβαίνω τίποτα means "I don't understand anything." Greek uses a double negative here, because it literally says "I don't understand nothing."
@pollybrady3191 Жыл бұрын
What does the "ta" mean? I did not understand what you said. Just started looking at your classes today and I like your presentation and style of explaining and teaching Greek . ❤ from England.
@thegreekacademy3643 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! "Τα" is what is called a "definite article" and is most often translated as "the." Greek speakers tend to use the definite article in places where English speakers might not, thus phrases like "I don't speak Greek" are most correctly stated: "Δεν μιλάω ΤΑ ελληνικά." ("I don't speak THE Greek"). This convention is sometimes dropped in everyday speech, but using the definite article when talking about languages in Greek is technically correct (and thus important to learn in the early stages).
