I'm a Greek-American who just came across your channel, and while I do know how to speak Greek, I enjoy watching your interviews with Greek locals -- it helps me understand the more conversational aspects of the language. My parents were both born and raised in small villages in Lakonia, and I went to Greek school at our local church from the ages of 7 to 13 ... but when I talk, I probably sound like I'm from the χωριό from the 1950s 😂 Anyway, I've been taking care of my elderly father, and he is able to watch Greek TV stations on his satellite dish. I've caught a few news reports on Alpha News about the heat wave currently in Athens, and I had a question about a word that people repeatedly use: χαμός. I've seen several different meanings for it, which are all negative (doom, chaos, loss) but the people who are using that word on the news (the folks who are being interviewed at ice cream stores, at the beach, etc) don't seem to be using it in that way. Also, because of its similarity to the word Χαμόγελο, which means to smile, I'm even further confused! Can you please shed some light on this word, and why it would be used when discussing the heat wave and people flocking to the beaches and ice cream shops? Σασ ευχαριστώ πολύ!
@EasyGreekVideos
@EasyGreekVideos 9 ай бұрын
Nice question! First of all, χαμογελώ and χαμός do not actually have a common root. Χαμογελώ comes from χαμω-γελάω, and this χαμω- means "low" or "on the ground/dirt" (and is also the root of «χαμηλά»). Think of a smile as a low-intensity, or even modest or timid, laugh. «Χάμω» is also sometimes used instead of «κάτω», as in «έπεσε χάμω», and in ancient Greek χαμαί referred to the ground. The word χαμαιλέων (chameleon) literally meant "dirt/ground lion." Yeah... «Χαμός», on the other hand, derives from «χάνω». It originally meant the death of a person («χάσανε την κόρη τους - ποτέ δεν ξεπεράσανε τον χαμό του παιδιού τους»), and is still used this way - notice the difference with the more general «χάσιμο». However, in modern Greek it is much more commonly used as an expression, what you hear on the TV: «(γίνεται) χαμός» - one English word that comes to mind is "kerfuffle", but it's not so idiomatic in Greek. «Χαμός» also means, as you mentioned, chaos or disarray of any kind - from crowds of people on the streets, lots of noise, the mess left over by a party, to, yes, dead bodies after a battle. I assume people using it to describe a heatwave mean that it has created chaos, disorder, and masses of people going to the beach or to have a nice παγωτό. It's one of those words that are hard to translate, and we even talked about it on our Untranslatable Greek Words live. I hope this helped!

@@EasyGreekVideos Wow ... thanks so much for the detailed, and simple-to-understand reply. You're very good at this. :) I do recall my mom sometimes saying "κατσε χαμω" instead of "κατσε κατω," though she would use the former when she was pissed off at us haha ... As for words that are hard to translate, my Greek friends, cousins and I always turn to two words we love to use: ζαβλακωμένος, which we use to describe a feeling of being out of it (tired, confused and discombobulated all at once) and κόμπιασα, which ... this one's harder to explain, but it's when you eat something too quickly and you get a pain in your chest. I looked up both words and realize they DO NOT mean what we use them to mean, but I'm just going to blame that on "Greeklish" and parents who were raised in the χωριό, as Greeks in the US have kind of created their own words and meanings. Anyway, thanks again -- you have a really cool channel!
