I took from this point (10 months ago) forward to the ANG (American Needlepoint Guild) Seminar in Houston, Texas this week. With what I learned from you, I was able to take an intermediate class, without a feeling of intimidation. Sure, I was not as proficient as most Stitcher there, however, I held my own. Thank you Jenny, so very much for sharing your knowledge in needlepoint. You are a great Internet instructor. Did I have fun being around like minded Stitchers? You bet it did!!! Saving my allowance for the Seminar, in Tucson, Arizona next year. Pat-South Padre Island, Texas

what happens to that knot from the waist yarn - you leave it just sit there? Every time you change color or even string you're supposed to make a waist yarn?

You snip off the waste knot when you are finished with that piece of Thread, assuming that you’ve been able to secure the thread with your stitches.

Waste knots are only used while you are stitching and then once you are finished stitching you can just snip them off because it has been secured on the back of the canvas!

@Needlepoint Is it okay to anchor the waste knot on the back of the canvas instead of the front, or does this make things more difficult/cumbersome?

I know this is like 5 years later, but I came across your video while looking up the difference between cross stitch and needlepoint. Is the only real difference just the fact that in needlepoint you essentially just do a half of the x in cross stitching?
@Needlepoint
@Needlepoint 6 ай бұрын
Yes! In cross stitch, you only do the x-shaped stitch but in needlepoint, there are hundreds of stitches you learn but the most basic is half of an x. Needlepoint canvases also already have the design on them while cross stitch you have to count and stitch from a separate chart.

When I do cross stitch my first stitch I don’t knot, I just have enough of a “tail” and I run it under the stitches on the back side. This keeps any bumps from being formed. Why does needlepoint use a waste knot instead?
@luciewinters1479
@luciewinters1479 3 жыл бұрын
The waste knot is essentially a "tail" that is secured, so that the same tension can be applied to the first stitch without worrying about the thread being pulled out. Once the thread tail is stitched over and secured, the knot can be snipped off. Hope this helps - happy stitching!

(New to needlepoint, but Xstitch veteran here). From what I can tell- they aren’t as worried about lumpy backgrounds haha. But seriously- seems like since a good amount of these projects have large areas of the same color so easy to keep tension of first few stitches? I can’t tell you how many first stitches I pulled out. Ha

How do you fix the canvas to makenit stiff?
@Needlepoint
@Needlepoint 2 жыл бұрын
The canvas should be stiff prior to stitching it, and it will soften as its worked on. If the canvas is already flexible, you can mount it on stretcher bars to keep the canvas plumb and lessen any possible warping. Happy stitching!

Once you stitch up to it, you snip it off! You will have locked the thread to the back of the canvas by stitching over the thread. You can start new threads this way as many times as you need to complete the project. Hope this helps. Happy Stitching!

Would the knot at the beginning just show on the right side of the canvas? I’m confused
@Needlepoint
@Needlepoint 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the knot will be visible until the thread is secure enough to cut the knot off. Once you've stitched over the thread (on the back side) with at least 5-6 stitches, you can snip the knot. The knot is there to make sure the thread stays in place while you maintain the normal tension. Happy stitching!

As long as you're consistent in your stitch, then you're doing it right. Try to keep your tension the same so your stitches are uniform, and enjoy the journey!

Why do you have the knot on the side facing you?
@ChoochooseU
@ChoochooseU 4 жыл бұрын
Phylicia Bozzi you snip off the “waste” knot when you are done. By putting your knot on the outside facing and working over it with stitches as you move along, it keeps the project contained and neat, and you’ll end up with a neat backing that allows you to use for a pillow, a stool, or other mountings. Needlepointers, and well for me, even my embroidery or other works, we take great pride in a neat backing as well as a beautiful front.

Why would you put the knot on the presentation side of the canvas?
@Needlepoint
@Needlepoint Жыл бұрын
The knot is on the front so the thread lays on the back side, where it will be stitched over to anchor it in place. Once there's at least 5-6 stitches covering the thread on the back, you can snip the knot off. Happy stitching!

If the know is on the top of your work. What happens to it as you go along ? Won’t he show in the stitches you do ?
@Needlepoint
@Needlepoint 2 жыл бұрын
You'll want to place the waste knot in a place where the stitching will cover the thread from the waste knot as you work. The waste knot thread just needs about 5-7 stitches to anchor it in place, and then the knot can be snipped off. If stitching doesn't cover over the waste knot thread, keep it on the canvas until another thread covers over it, so your work doesn't unravel. Because the thread from the waste knot is on the back side of the canvas, it won't show on your finished piece. Happy stitching!

Definitely better techniques to use than a "waste knot" such as a Bargello Tuck. You shouldn't use any knots at all, unless it's a French Knot.

Why is the waste Knott in front?
@Needlepoint
@Needlepoint 2 жыл бұрын
The waste knot is in front so the thread will be in the back, which can then be stitched over as you work on the piece. Once you're within 1-2 stitches of the waste knot, you can pull gently on the thread and snip it close to the canvas, and you're all set. Happy stitching!

Not to worry! The knot is there to hold the thread (tail) in place on the back. The knot stays there until you've stitched over the 'tail' 5-6 times. Then, you'll gently pull up on the knot, snip that thread close to the canvas, and it's gone!

@Needlepoint
@Needlepoint Жыл бұрын
If you already have stitching on your canvas, you can run a new strand through the back side stitching, and you won't have to worry about an anchor knot. If there are no stitches near by, you'll need to have an anchor knot, and also leave about an inch of thread on the back side to stitch over, which secures the thread in place. The best way to set that up is to have the knot on the top, so the extra thread to cover is on the back side. Once there are several stitches covering that thread on the back, you can snip the knot. You'll run the risk of snipping other threads if you start the waste knot on the back side. We hope this helps!

It is a waste knot which means you cut it away after you stitch over it! So it will not be on the final product - it's just to anchor your threads in an area you have not already stitched.
