I have been sewing for some time now and always found myself adjusting sewing patterns at the BUST (a lengthy and sometimes complicated task) - all I needed to do was take it at the chest measurement and cinch the waist in instead!! ♥ ♥ THANK YOU!!!!!!! Wish I had seen this moons ago! :)

Very helpful, thank you. As I'm small busted, I tend to have trouble with too much fabric gathering around that area when I've made a dress in the past, I think your advice may help me from here on.

I started sewing when I was 15. I am now 62. I have stopped using patterns bc although in clothing I am an 8, by my waist measurement I am an 18!

Clothing manufacturers have changed their sizing over time but pattern makers haven't, accounting for the discrepancy in size. As long as you're following your measurements, you should be just fine!

The only problem is that a lot of the simplicity patterns tend to run large for some reason. I made the mistake of sewing based on my measurements and ended up 2-3 sizes too big (on a pair of shorts too!!), so now I just use muslin to guess and then go from there. It's not just Simplicity either. It's all the pattern companies. I have no faith in the sizing system anymore.

Lots of them add "ease", but many don't need it anymore. Heck, my spandex bodysuit pattern included several inches of ease, and bodysuit patterns are supposed to be SMALLER because the fabric will stretch to cover the gap. Like... what?

I had something similar! I used my measurements to cut out a dress and even cut it a little smaller because I intended a bit tighter fitting. It was a tarp!

I've been sewing apparel for many years; I'm 57 and started sewing at age 12. For most of my adult life I used a size 8 pattern and generally got a proper fit. At age 40 became pregnant resulting in weight gain that did not melt off. A few years later I began to pay attention to the sizing measurements on patterns. In recent years I made a cost in size 14, and began a dress in same size. The coat was a terrible fit; I was swimming in it. I gave the coat away. The dress, in shoulders and bust is huge, on me; I've yet to go back to finish that dress. After these two fails, from my pile of unfinised projects, I pulled out the makings for a fitted, retro, satin robe I'd cut out in size 10; a project I failed to complete upon believing it would not fit. I sewed it up and it fits, I wear it often. I'm back to ignoring pattern measurements; I buy size ten and make adjustments for waist and hips when neccessary. Granted I've not yet made anything specific to lower body (such as Jean's, slacks or shorts). Perhaps that would be where a size 14 might come in.

I still get stuck in choosing. My bust and hips are usually one or two sizes larger than my waist. If I go with the bust/hip the dress come out like moo-moo's and if I go with the waist they don't close. What do I do?

Watch other videos around KZbin for who to cut the pieces narrower or wider based on your needs. Might be most expensive, but easiest, to buy a dress form with your measurements.

Are the sizes on the patterns USA sizes or UK sizes? My measurements are so different that I don't know which size to use. can you help? High bust: 95 (14-16) / Bust: 104 (18) / Nap to Waist: 42 (14-16) / Waist: 91 (20-22) / Hip: 97 (14). So what size do I choose?

I am a complete novice with a very basic pattern and am trying to fit a straight sleeve into a nativity tunic (Simplicity 4795). I am making a medium tunic and cannot understand why the large dot at the neck position is on the line below the medium cutting line (which is actually on the small size cutting line.) I would be grateful if someone can explain how I can cut correctly. Kay

I used the measurements on the envelope and it's too small. It's not in the seam allowances either because I was following very closely because the fabric was very expensive. Now it's ruined.
