TRUE CRIME PLAYLIST: • True Crime Body Language
Learn how to read body language. Body language is a type of nonverbal communication in which physical behaviors, as opposed to words, are used to express or convey the information. Such behavior includes facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space. Body language exists in both animals and humans, but this article focuses on interpretations of human body language. It is also known as kinesics. Although body language is an important part of communication, most of it happens without conscious awareness. Body "language" must not be confused with sign language, as sign languages are languages and have their own complex grammar systems, as well as being able to exhibit the fundamental properties that exist in all languages. Body language, on the other hand, does not have a grammar system and must be interpreted broadly, instead of having an absolute meaning corresponding with a certain movement, so it is not a language, and is simply termed as a "language" due to popular culture. In a society, there are agreed-upon interpretations of particular behavior. Interpretations may vary from country to country, or culture to culture. On this note, there is controversy on whether body language is universal. Body language, a subset of nonverbal communication, complements verbal communication in social interaction. In fact some researchers conclude that nonverbal communication accounts for the majority of information transmitted during interpersonal interactions.
Relevant concepts include:
Emblems - Body movements or gestures that are directly translatable into a word or phrase
Illustrators - Accompany or reinforce verbal messages
Batons - Temporally accent or emphasize words or phrases
Deictic movements - Point to a present object
Kinetographs - Depict a body action
Spatial movements - Depict a spatial relationship
Pictographs - Draw a picture of their referent
Rhythmic movements - Depict the rhythm or pacing of an event
Affect Displays - Show emotion
Regulators - Control the flow and pace of communication
Manipulators - Release physical or emotional tension
The Behavior Panel is a group made up of the world's top body language and behavior experts, Mark Bowden, Scott Rouse, Greg Hartley, and Chase Hughes. Together they analyze the body language and behavior displayed in videos in the public interest. The Behavior Panel is a non-partisan group, looking to educate and entertain the public with their interest and expertise in nonverbal communication, body language, deception detection, interrogation, and resistance to interrogation. By looking at the gestures, facial expressions, micro-expressions, and context around what people say, this group of nonverbal behavior experts reveals the possible truth and deceptions. This behavior profiler group takes on the task of investigating the behavior behind the crime news that often forces us to think and feel the way we do. The Behavior Panel is a task force made up of four of the best body language and behavior profiler experts in the world.

RE: Extra Face. I’ve worked in film for 22 years and this phenomenon extends past just the face. I did a show last year where we had an extra driving a $100K SUV. All he had to do was drive it into frame under a bridge. We rehearsed the shot several times and it was great. Easy peasy, right? Nope. The second the cameras rolled, for some reason the extra decided to stomp on the gas, coming in significantly faster than he’d repeatedly rehearsed, and crashed the thing into the pillar of the bridge, destroying the brand new $100K SUV and shutting production down for the night. Fortunately no one was hurt. As soon as you say ‘action’ it’s extra face, extra lead foot. Same same. It’s a weird phenomenon.

Greg, if it’s you in the comments this week, I just want to say that I’m sorry for your hard year & hope you’re doing ok and that you have loved ones around & that you can go on to heal. This is definitely not boring! I loved this episode. I loved seeing more of your friendship, more of how you learn from each other & talk to each other off camera, you’re all so funny together. I also loved hearing your personal stories of how you got involved in this area. Chase, that girl at the bar really lucked out, I’d have bitten her hand off ; ) (an English saying) This is my favourite part of the week too. Much love 💕

As a licensed psychotherapist, I've applied what I've learned here into my private practice to assist my clients in their therapeutic goals. Knowing how to read their body language helps me know where to go next to help treat their trauma. Often times trauma is preverbal and I look for any clues I can find in the body to treat the trauma. The Body definitely Keeps Score.

This comment may get lost but I just want to say how much I appreciate these videos! i'm 24 and I have PTSD and ADHD, watching these has been one of the biggest tools in my recovery while waiting for mental health support. They've given me such great insight into what's happening to my body, why and ways to help it too, I'm a lot better at recognising my symptoms now and how I interact with/come across to others. I know this isn't necessarily the intended purpose of these videos but they are an amazing tool for it! For example I never knew why I sway so much when I'm standing still, or this video where Mark explains how people who experience a lot of anxiety and adrenaline have issues with digestion, sustained weight loss and becoming gaunt over time. I've been experiencing this for the last few years now and most doctors refuse to accept it could be mental health related so I never really understood why it was happening but now I do I feel like I have a bit more control back. Thank you guys for sharing them, It's helped change my life!!

I'm officially obsessed with this channel. Admittedly I am too lazy to purchase and read everyones' books which will undoubtedly slow my skills process, but it's nowhere near as entertaining as watching Chase forget to unmute or watching his dogs video bomb the episodes( love you Chase). Scott I know the panelist sometimes get heated when you throw in a couple of extra cents worth, but I personally love to see steam rising from your ears with a big dialog bubble above your head with hashtags, ampersands, and percent signs substituted for sailor words. I don't want to watch lobotomized zombies deliver neutral assessments. And if the Pinocchio nose fits, call the spade a spade. I have no problem with any of you identifying when a liar's pants are on fire. Sometimes people are all self righteous when someone is exposed as a non-truth teller. If they told the truth to begin with they would not be subject to the application of labels on their deceitful behavior or speech.

Great getting to know your background! I've already nicknamed you. Chase is Mother Goose because he seems very serious. Greg is Brother Bear because he's very intimidating. Scott is Papa Bear because he's calming. If I have to receive bad news, he's the one to deliver it! Mark is Shaggy from Scooby Doo. He's laid back and seems cool and up to doing whatever. My beloved of over 30yrs. died suddenly 6yrs ago. If I get the courage to ever date again, the credit will go to you! You're teaching me so much and you make it fun because of your camaraderie! P.S. I binge watch TBP because I have ADHD, which often features an inability to read facial cues and body language. I have to think it is helping me in my job which involves interviewing. I loved this video because it tied everything together, but especially the origin stories, senseless discussion and good-natured ribbing of four fascinating bibliophiles. Entertaining and educational!

I have only been watching your videos for a couple of weeks. I’m 61 years old, and have become captivated. This one was the best one that I’ve watched, because you’ve explained what to look for, and what it looks like. My problem is I need to watch the interviews several times to see what you are talking about. I love watching y’all .

This was my favourite ep so far! Felt like a sneak peak behind the scenes, like we were a fly on the wall, listening to you all discuss what you love most. You all have so many different perspectives to bring to the table and you cater for all learning styles. I like the in depth analysis and jargon, backed up by 3asy to remember, bite size, digestible terms. So good! We will all be professors in no time! A massive thank you to you all 💕

No Scott, this isn't the most boring one. Actually, oddly, this one brought up the most emotions/feelings inside of me than I've experienced in a very long time. I'm embarrassed to bring up what it brought out in me within the audience setting here, but there were several emotions.

Hi guys I just watched a police interview with a criminal. In the beginning, the guy reaches down and ties his left shoe. As more probing questions are being asked, I start watching him a little closer. For the second time, he reaches down to his left shoe again, only this time, he actually un-ties his shoe, that he just tied a few minutes ago and ties it back again. He ends up, un-tying and re-tying, that same shoe, 5 times during his interview. I found that to be so interesting. I’ve never seen anybody do that. One of my favorite parts of your videos, is the funny and fitting names, that you come up with, to label specific actions. Maybe you guys can help me, coin a funny name, for this. I just love this kind of stuff! Thanks for all your videos

My favorite moment here, is right after Greg answers the “are you sending signals to each other” question by laughing and saying “of course we are!”. Here’s what I love: Up until that moment, our gents had been happily- even exuberantly- gesturing,etc.. and then, right AFTRR he jocularly admits that: Everyone goes into complete “pause” mode. The Fab Four suddenly go quiet and still-IN UNISON- for a few long seconds. Deliciously funny.

"Most boring one so far". Personally this was my favorite and I've watched probably about half your videos. Knowing where everybody came from and why and how they started doing this was awesome. Plus this is free information of you breaking down body language that you use during your normal videos. Breaking it down for us layman's. I learned a lot more off of this than I normally do off your videos. Great job guys and look forward to continuing to watch you guys. Can I send you some video of my girlfriend and I arguing and will go over as an audience if she was lying or not lol.

That was the opposite of boring! I absolutely loved the detailed explanation of the 4 Fs state. I also loved hearing about why you all got into this area. Your chemistry with each other is really nice to watch.

Chase Hughes! I have a unique and important occurrence happened to my guy after target shooting He is a 53yr old healthy man who golfs and hunts, we live in Montana. He suffers from type 1 diabetes, on on a pump, we try to be healthy. A week ago he was with a few buddies and he started acted DRUNK. (Too drunk 2 fast in my RN mind). I immediately asked him to repeat LASAGNA. He couldn’t . (If he was drunk he’d ask for extra cheese!) it effects in other parts of brain No Lasagne. -low insulin

Thank you all for doing this each week. I look forward to each episode and have learned a lot from each of you. Thank you, Chase, for pointing out how unique and insightful Mark's monologues are, I get frustrated when people say Mark needs to be more concise. I appreciate all four of you in different ways, you keep being you! Thanks again.

Really enjoyed hearing your personal stories. I connected with Chase feeling phony (which clearly he is not.) I didn't go to college and always had to train myself on my jobs, for the most part, which made me feel like a fake, even when I won many awards. It wasn't till I was old that I realized I could have done anything if I had confidence in myself. Also, with Greg researching odd stuff. I used to do that to help my bf on his scripts. I would worry about anyone looking at my history. Scott, your story was so heartwarming. To have such a great dad help you with your interests, I love it; Mark, to overcome and adjust to be the success you are, not easy in any way. Amazing stories! Anyway, thank you all for giving of your time and knowledge.

I absolutely loved this one!!! I really enjoyed hearing how each one of you got into this area of expertise…fascinating!❤ I have always enjoyed how you each bring different experiences and perspectives to the conversation…the science, the storytelling, the military and interrogation. Together you weave a complex pattern of weft and warp that creates cloth rich in texture. You teach, you learn, you entertain, and are entertained. Amazing! Fascinating! Intelligent and educational! I have 3 of y’all’s books and am working my way through them. I will definitely be buying more of them!

I absolutely loved this episode. Learnt so many new things. Loved learning about the 'extra face' - I knew what you meant, but the expression now makes sense now that you have explained it, Scott. And enjoyed the banter between you guys. This program is my Thursday night treat - my husband is now used to me scuttling off with the IPad to spend time with the Behaviour Boys.

I learn so much here! I don't tend to retain much of it, but that's ok, because my forgetfulness gives me an excuse to watch over and over again. It's a joy to see how each of you are different in approach and personality. Also, the ways you relate to one another is intriguing, touching, and funny.
