Learn How To Stop More Shots 5-Hole | Hockey Goalie Tips Ep 4

In this video, I am going to show you 3 things to help stop more shots 5-hole.
Number 1: Does the player have someone to pass to?
In this situation, the player had no one to pass to which means he only had 2 options, shoot or deke.
Because he has no one to pass to, this is the perfect opportunity to challenge the shooter by skating 1-2 feet out from the top of your crease to make yourself bigger and to take away any holes the player may see.
Number 2: Is your defensemen back checking?
Now if your defensemen is on the inside of the shooter (closer to the middle of the ice) and they are using their stick or body to force the shooter to the outside (closer to the boards) then more often than not, the shooter will take a shot rather than trying to deke if your defensemen if able to keep up with the shooter.
If the shooter is faster than your defensemen, then they may still try to deke if there is enough room and the puck is on their backhand.
Number 3: Is the puck on the players forehand or backhand?
If the player has the puck on their forehand they are more likely to shoot than if it is on their backhand.
So in this situation all you need to do is focus on your depth control and force the player to shoot. This will give you more control over the play and a better chance at stopping the puck from going in.

One thing I’d add is balance. If you’re going to butterfly quickly and you’re sitting down your legs will lift up and the seal on the ice won’t be as strong vs if you’re upright or leaning forward a bit. Being balanced on top of your knees and really driving them to the ice quickly gets that hole closed up quick. And stick positioning of course.

Forgot to say, keep your stick on the ice, basically all shots along the ice should be saved with your stick and steared to the corner.

The stick. Not flat on the ice and your blocker flails out. You had no clue where that shot was going. Stick is a HUGE part of 5 hole protection.

Very good points you made... for me the shooter gets the shot of quickly. Do not concentrate only on the puck keep his hands in your peripheral vision and react faster because of that... helped me a lot with our good shooters....

also, i think anticipating a shot 5-hole is a good way to get shooters to shoot elsewhere. drawing respect by always keeping that 5-hole closed i think is a decent way of making sure you don't have to always think a 5-hole shot is coming. sooner or later they're going to start lifting the puck, then adapt to that. for me a 5-hole goal has always been a confidence drainer. So i try to never give them that. ultimately, each scenario can bring different instincts to make a save. Basically, always try your best!
