It seems to me that the man was punished for being deceitful, selfish, and lazy. He manipulated his way into a marriage with the princess.

Im not sure, @@morganpyre6689 some fairy tales reward people for being clever, even if in today's standards we woulod see them as deceitful. He was rewarded for being hardworking (when he rayed for a year straight). But then he became lazy after marrying and started playing with magic objects, so hewas punished. I believe it is a common theme in these stories.
