Another reason Latin is still a living language is that it's still growing. The Vatican expands the Latin dictionary every few years or so to include new concepts such as "helicopter", "computer" and "internet". Continuing to expand is the main criterion for determining a living language.
@mateuslima18688 жыл бұрын
But there are no one in the world that have latin as mother tongue, that's why it is not considered a "alive language". People from vatican know Latin, but they are "Latin native speakers"
@Awakeningspirit208 жыл бұрын
Not even that, as people from the Vatican are from all over the world and no one is born there as clergy cannot marry! Yes Latin is its official language, but it's alive in other ways like through the Romance Languages, medicine, and the Vatican actually uses it. Fun fact, Vatican City is the only place on earth where you can select Latin as a language when using an ATM!
@infinitesimotel5 жыл бұрын
"computer" and "helicopter" are already derived from Latin and Greek, so is "internet", it is only their context that makes them seem something else. Not really hip with the idea of the jesus squad leading the way. Stay Classical, it is The one.
@Aceshot-uu7yx Жыл бұрын
@crustum cremo I know it's been three years, but there is no "the One" with Latin. Sallust already shows there was Varence in Latin in terms of conjugation and pronunciation for Latin with his poetry. The difference between classical and church Latin is only really pronunciation, it would be like arguing over a true Dutch or a true Greek dialect when no such thing exists. To veer of topic a little, the church is also the reason those classics still exist to even know what classical Latin sounded like. We only have Cicero, tacitus, sallust and others because of the "Jesus gang" which is only the catholic church and really only the Vatican, with most scientists and students not using church Latin pronunciation since the 60s, so they were never leading the way in anything other then adding words, which anyone could do and has done. So your idea of saying classical as if church Latin is some perversion is just wrong, it's a diffrent pronounciation that developed over 1500 years, it's like arguing ancient Greek, is superior to modern Greek when they barely have any diffrences and are still intelligible, just drunk sounding to one or the other. Heck, most Vatican theologians can still speak regular Latin and do. Edit. Some syntaxes diffrences did occur with prepositions and indirect discourse but this happened to be based on the presence of the writer rather than any major changes, as well as the fact that this did not directly ruin Latin and still made it have more in common then say, old English and modern English or even byzantine Greek and modern Greek. So not a whole lot actually changed but new stuff was added to use the same ideas.

Hi Gregory, nice job, you are actualy describing the romanian language :) latin is not a dead language unless we go extinct. Everything you described here is still alive, this is the exact way we pronounce each letter today, we still use hundreeds of latin words, such us patria (country), sunt (I am). It is quite hard for a native english speaker to pronounce corectly the letters but you did a good job. I've learned latin in school, and they still teach latin in schools today but for only one year, unfortunately :)

Just a suggestion, when you try to teach pronunciation, you put the English word next to the letters. Like in 8:32 where b is bounce e.t.c It would be very helpful if you could also put a Latin word next to it (like with the 'Magnus') that actually uses the sound as this would help in learning and would help those that are trying to learn Latin from the original and it gives them immediate practice. I know that you used a handful of phrases at the end but still...

If i may be so pedantic to say: nope, Spanish is closely related to latin not (technically) vice versa. But most modern languages (as he has said the Romantic languages) are derived from Latin. You'll find Italian is even closer to Latin than Spanish

@brothebys8 жыл бұрын
+jimmy alderson Well, you're wrong. Most modern languages do not derive from Latin, not at all. Having some loan words and having Latin influence does not mean it is derived from Latin. There are only a hand-full of languages derived from Latin and those are called the Romance languages which are DIRECTLY related to Latin. Spanish and Italian are probably the closest languages to Latin today. Where did you get the notion that relation has heirarchy too? Does that even make sense? There is no evidence to support that Italian is closer to Latin than Spanish, where did you get that from? Also where did you get that most languages were derived from Latin? That is absolutely false. And, yes Spanish is closely related to Latin (AND viceversa), it is a direct descendant of Latin after all.

Pronunciation in Latin is super easy if your native language is Finnish. Finnish hasn't been written for very long and thus the letters are pronounced exactly as they're written, like in Latin. Furthermore, we have many of the same sounds such as the 'rolled r', 'eu', double vowels and 'gn' (hangnail)

Latin should have become the Lingua Franca instead of English :D And that's coming from a Polish-Canadian native English speaker. It seems way easier to pronounce than English for a lot of foreigners, and the word order in Latin is not as important as word endings, in Latin you can either say, "The cat bit me", or "I bit the cat" and it would still have the SAME meaning, because as long as you keep the dative, accusative, nominative endings in their proper place, you will always be understood, not to mention personal pronouns are not always necessary, heck instead of saying, "Ego vadam revertar ad Germanium" (I will go back to Germany) you can simply skip the "ego" completely because "vadam" already tells you its the first person singular.

Great video, but I am confused on one part. At the end, you pronounced the phrase "Errare humanum est" with an accent on the second syllable of the word "humanum", but I don't see any indication, such as a line over the "a", that it is the long syllable referenced in rule 2 of determining where the accent lies. If you could explain that would be helpful. Thank you.
@Gm0301926 жыл бұрын
Hi Dale, I try to include the long vowel lines (macrons) as often as I can throughout my videos but please bear in mind that when reading Latin inscriptions or books or scrolls these are frequently omitted. They are not a part of the spelling of the word, per se, but help new learners to know which vowels should be long and which should be short. There should actually be three macrons in that sentence reading: "Errāre hūmānum est." Therefore, the accent falls on the penultimate syllable of both "errare" and "humanum" as the vowel is long. If ever in doubt, look up a word in a good Latin dictionary or on Wiktionary and you should find macrons included. I hope this helps! -Greg
@dalesmith72506 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply, Greg, I appreciate it. So if I am interpreting correctly, it is basically up to the student of Latin to know which syllables are accented? In a similar way to that of English where one just kind of knows from experience?
