Are you going to make any further videos on this? I know these are a few years old. There are not many good choices on here for learning Latin, in my opinion. I enjoy your teaching style. You explain things in a way I can understand. It seems that so many videos of people teaching any language, they make the mistake of explaining it from the point of view of someone who already KNOWS the language. You have a knack for explaining it in a way that is comfortable for those who are not familiar with it, you explain it in a way that is easier to understand. I have not worded that well, but hopefully you understand what I am trying to get across :) Peace. And thank you :)

In English there actually is the subjunctive present tense which is identical to the infinitive just without "to". Examples: 1. Anne suggested that Tom come with her. 2. Anne demanded that Tom be given more training.

English does have a subjunctive mood; it forms this often by composing *would* with the present indicative form of the verb. And with the verb *to be*, English used to form the subjunctive mood by using the past tense plural form. An example of both of these used in the same sentence is: "if I were you, I would watch my back." Both verbs are in the subjunctive: the verb "were" is "mismatched" to the word *you* to indicate the subjunctive mood, and the verb *watch* is prefixed by the auxiliary verb *would* to form another version of the subjunctive. The subjunctive does seem to be going into abeyance nowadays, and many people seem to find ways to get a subjunctive intention across, without actually forming the subjunctive. (If I were doing that . . .; If you were doing that; . . . if he, she, it were doing that; . . . etc.)

When will you do another video? Really liked them
@joedr645810 жыл бұрын
Hi Gregory, Thanks for the lessons. You mentioned that English does not have a subjunctive mood. My understanding is that English does. We form it by using the past tense of the verb and "wouldl" to indicate a hypothetical or a condition contrary to fact. An example would be: "If I were a musician, I would play classical piano." Or "Had I know the situation, I would not have gone to visit them" Thanks!
@joedr645810 жыл бұрын
A typo: "Had I known the situation, I would not have gone to visit them". Another example might be, "Would that I won the lottery!"

We definitely do have the subjunctive in English, it's just not as obvious and obtrusive as in other languages. And we sometimes fudge it in informal situations. It tends to come out in formal, ceremonial situations. A great example is, "May God bless you." God is third person singular, so if the sentence were indicative, it would be, "God blesses you" - this would be INDICATING the fact of something happening. "May God bless you" is not indicating a fact. It is expressing the speaker's feelings concerning the possibility of something happening. This is subjunctive. Other languages have radically different versions of verbs in the subjunctive. In English, we just use the infinitive (at least when we're using the subjunctive properly). So it is proper to say, "It is important that you BE good," instead of, "It is important that you are good."

English does have a subjunctive, it's just not used anymore. For instance, technically speaking, you should say, "If he be willing, may I speak to him?" But nowadays we just use the indicative, as in "If he is willing...", because we're too lazy to use the subjunctive. Whatever the case, English does have a subjunctive.

02:25 We do indeed have subjunctive in English, but it's becoming less and less common as people get dumber and dumber and lean more towards a monopoly governed by the indicative.

I am a sophomore in highschool, and pretty much pissed away at my Latin I class, didn't take it seriously and just cheated through every test etc (which has led to massively backfire). I'm now in Latin II (The Latin I teacher selects students to continue the latin course or move "down" to Spanish). I've been many videos on conjugating, since that's all I have trouble with... Conjugating. I know up to the fourth declension (working on memorizing the 5th), and I know how to form Present, Imperf, and Perfect tense of a verb in the ACTIVE mood, The rest is memorizing which I may do on my own. But I struggle with the 2ND Conjugation, I believe ere is the 2cnd principle part... But how do you go about forming the tenses for each? For example with the first conjugation Amo, in each tense it would be: Amo, Amas, Amat, Amamus(?), Amatis, and Amant; slice off the RE -- (please let me know if I messed any of those up - or if I am completely wrong or in the clear:) but for 2cnd conjugation verbs, such as video, how would you go about forming the tenses? I have noticed you just keep the E, so video, vides(?), videt(?), videmus, videtis, vident; I don't really know how to form 2cnd conjugation verbs in each tense (or 3rd, 3rd IO, 4th). You're probably confused after reading my essay on my misunderstanding of verbs and their conjugations etc... But please help to the best of your abilities. Also let me know if my tense forming (active) of video was correct (most likely not).

English does have subjunctive and a lot of European languages do. For example, If there hadn’t been much rain in spring, we would have had a good harvest now. (past) If he smoked less, his cough might be well soon. (present) If the lecturer should be late, you would have to make a speech first. (future) and in French, Je souhaite que ton premier voyager en France soit réussi. Elles sont très contentes qu’il fasse beau aujourd’hui. Il est nécessaire que vous pensiez à votre avenir.
@maanj.82757 жыл бұрын
I am not sure those are examples of the subjunctive. I think the subjunctive is found in examples like "If I were you, I would do it. ['were' instead of 'was'], or "It is required that he be there on time" [be]; He recommended that my sister study more [study].
