This is absolutely brilliant !! I am 91 years old --- i made made my first holy communion when I was five years old. My father was an Irish catholic an R.A.M.C. surgeon in two world wars. My mother was brought up Lutheran --- an enthusiastic convert ---- an army "widow" ---- who did not have the opportunity to learn learn much about her new faith ---- but who took my sister and me to Mass every Sunday. I only had a Sunday Missal ---- but had no difficulty understanding what it as all about as i had been well taught by an SHCJ nun (Society of the Holy Child Jesus). I am trying to write our family history for my five grand-children and the progeny of sixteen first cousins --- from my own life experience. It is the holy sacrifice of the Mass that matters. Without it NOTHING matters, Everything is total chaos. The New Order is valid --- but only as an acorn is to an oak tree. In 1964 I joined my newly married husband in the Borneo jungle war zone, The two parish priests in Sariki were Dutch ---- their sermons were in Chinese and Iban ---- i spent Christmas in Zimbabwe with my sister --- the sermon was in Shona --- i have lost count of other languages I have sat through. Latin is a dead language. Unlike English, the meanings of its words never change.

Awesome podcast. Thank you very much. On the masses not understanding holy language. As I Am writing this I am looking at the Notre Dame de Maastricht, The Church founded by Saint Servatius. When he came to Maastricht in the 4th Century he spoke Armenian/Greek probably, he did not speak the local language. Legend has it that locals didn't understand him ever, except when he served mass, than they could understand every word he said. I am new to The Catholic Church, but already I have a fondness for Latin and Gregorian Chant. Luckily I am in Churches where there is organ music the occasional Gregorian Chant and the Latin in many prayers. I have been to guitar masses though and I find them absolutely awful. As a performance artist I know from experience people do not have to understand you to get your performance. I would say it is more important that the performer gets what he is doing and can belief in it for the performance to succeed.
