Hello David, I'm a 70 year old fellow magi living and working in Las Vegas. Just for kicks I thought I would watch you, even at my age you always can learn. I'm working on new coin routines at the moment. Magic will keep you young at heart, also keep your mind thinking when you get old. The tricks you showed today I learned in the early 70's, and forgot about. Just so you know you did an excellent job in teaching, you are very clear, and with today's tech. you can pause and re watch. When I was learning magic we only had books. I joined the Magic Castle in Hollywood in 1975, actually my Korean magician wife and I joined together, she was a natural and I would struggle to learn. I was very fortunate to have her help me. We went to many, many magic lectures together on Sunday Afternoons, at the Magic Castle. Lecturers would come in from all over the world and still do, but to the point you are as good a teacher as anyone I ever saw. When you perform never use he word trick, I learned this from my mentor who entertained the pres. at the white house. You are going to show a magical mystery, a magical effect, or just plain magic. When you use the word trick, your aud. automatically thinks of you as a trickster, not a magician that does magic, it lowers you. Also, never mention your hands are empty, never mention as you did, I have some magician rope. As soon as you say magician rope, it ceases to be normal rope, there's something fishy if it's magician rope. Don't even say normal rope, it's rope period. I've dealt with every walk of life in the last 45 years, and magic has been very good to me. I learned a lot from the professor (Dai Vernon) the king of the Magic Castle. Because he was infatuated with my wife I got to sit with him many, many hours. He would lecture me, and he wouldn't accept anything but perfection. He also told wonderful stories, maybe you know, he was the man who fooled Houdini. He hated Houdini, Houdini would bill himself as the king of cards, the professor would say, he butchered a deck of cards. The professor told us one afternoon these magicians got together, and Houdini (Harry) had them lock him up in a closet. The professor laughed and said, that s.o.b. would still be there if we hadn't let him out. Harry was a great showman, but not a good magician according to Dai Vernon. Two things of advice I learned early on, don't run if there not chasing you. (don't get nervous) and Michael Ammar who did card on the ceiling for the Queen of England would always say in his lectures, there's no in between in magic, you're either a fool, or a legend. I don't mean to sound like a know it all, there are endless things I don't know, magic has no end to it. I never gave any advice to anyone on line, you just hit me as a really nice person, which will only help you. If people like YOU, they will like your magic, make it fun, but keep it magical, funny is money believe me. It took me 20 years to learn how to bring out the real personality I had to be funny. People love to laugh, and what's more fun than to witness a miracle and have a good laugh at the same time. It will come with time, but you look like you're going to be a doctor. There are many magician doctors at the Magic Castle and Dentist as well. I always perform at the doctors office for him and the nurses. When I cut open a lemon and let him pull out a dollar bill with his singed signature on it, he told the secretary Magic Art. never pays. Yes I am Magic Art., my real name is Art. Johnson, so that males me the orig. Magic Johnson, I use this line. Here's my web. site ( www.magicfingersart.com ) click on vid.. It's just a promo, and it's seven year old. I'd like to think I a much better magician with seven yrs. more practice, and a variety of people. When I go work a hotel suite it's always for what we call in Vegas (wales) these are the guys that will drop a mill. or two. in three days. If you baffled them, and make them laugh, a four or five hundred dollar tip is not unusual, on top of your fee and that's for 40 min. max., you will feel when your aud. has had enough, and when it's time to finale, never go past that time. This comes from hundreds of shows. Good luck to you my young friend, take your magic serious, practice until it's perfect. I use a three away mirror, and then for stand up effects I will video myself from all three sides. Normally in close up magic it's the guy on your left that will bust you so turn your body slightly to the left. You wear glasses, so do I and I have learned to use my glasses to throw people off. Cardini did it with a bifocal, just at the moment he needed misdirection he would let the bifocal drop from his eye, I swear this is the longest comment I every written. I hope I have shared some knowledge with you. Magic Art.
