It is an interesting technique that must be learned with patience. I did it almost immediately, even if unfortunately I don't play a very performing horn. This technique is used in Carl Maria Von Weber's concertino for horn and orchestra.

I knew a girl back in college who could split notes with her embouchure and sing a 3rd note. I think it's like some people that can trill their tongue and whistle at the same time for a trilling whistle.

I heard what I assume is this technique in "shepherd's tune" by Arkady Shilkloper, and it peaked my interest. Thanks for the tutorial, I'm actually getting somewhere when I tried doing it. It seems to be much easier at lower range.

Good to hear! Yes, Arkady is very good in multiphonics. It depends on how high you can sing. For me also lower is easier.

awesome video - so far i can make a nice sound but as soon as i try changing the top note my intonation on the lower note completely falls off the rails. i feel like it would be more stable if i was playing a higher note but i can't sing high enough :(

Thank you! Good question! This is a common problem I also had a lot. At the moment you're changing the top note you need to make your throat more hollow. Otherwise the played note goes with the sung note and you have nice parallel fifths. Imagine the feeling when you yawn. Let me know if that helps!

Hi, is this something you can only do on the F horn or can it be done on the Bb side as well?
@austrismusic
@austrismusic 3 жыл бұрын
It can be done on both horns but I recommend the F side because it blends better with the voice. At least from my experience.

when i attempted this, I noticed my throat struggling. When I sing into the horn it's like my throat wants to open up in a way that it normally doesn't when I play the horn. Is this right, or have I been playing the horn wrong all this time? 😅

The throat definitely feels different when I'm playing multiphonics! I think that's normal..

You were 12 when you already mastered this technique? I'm 16 and I'm barely getting better at slurs💀

Mastered is not the right word 😂 I managed to get a sound out. It took quite a while but it was fun!
