Seriously, Multiphonics! Why they're awesome & relevant for brass players
Thanks Nick Platoff of San Francisco Symphony for being live participatory audience!
"Multiphonics" describes the simple act of singing & playing simultaneously on a wind instrument. Anybody can do it. This was long considered an extended technique for the horn ("French horn"), although now like trills multiphonics are an important and relevant part of horn playing.
Practicing multiphonics on horn has a host of benefits:
- Improved Intonation
- Better understanding of harmonic series matrix
- Promotes singing-style air
- Develops vowel & overtone control
- Sounds awesome
- Feels great
- Allows creative use of harmony on otherwise monophonic instrument
- Great party trick too :-D
I practice multiphonics with Modacity music practice platform, a free-to-download iOS app that I'm helping to create. Since practicing with Modacity, my multiphonics skills have improved tremendously.
If you're not practicing multiphonics on horn, today is the day to start. Get in touch if you have any questions or suggestions!
