I just started my painting journey and I love impressionist style painting so so much! it's just so soft and pleasing to the eye (':

Some people even i, as a painter may look at this as just like doodles or a lazy messy painting that a child can do. But when i first did impressionist style painting, i could not make it look understandable. Impressionism takes discipline
@LynnePriceStudio3 жыл бұрын
Impressionism is much more difficult than tight realism.
@DeliciousVicious7773 жыл бұрын
@@LynnePriceStudio not sure I agree with that totally. I'll agree impressionism is difficult but everything is subjective. You can get away with not really knowing all the fundamentals with a very loose impression piece but to try and complete a detailed, realistic work where artistic license rarely applies is much much more difficult if you don't have proper experience, training or education. I guess in a sense it really applies to what the artist is more comfortable with doing.
@Ranger12162 жыл бұрын
In my experience…..Impressionism is exciting, un-predicable, emotive though not realism-given. It is an enjoyable style as if the brush takes a life of its own….I admit realism is more demanding in the discipline of the artist. I one time described impressionist style as a appropriate for ADHD….like myself….
@erin758 Жыл бұрын
@@DeliciousVicious777 - Impressionism needs practice and training. Impressionist paintings need to depict accurate lighting. You should know how to predict and understand how light affects a scene. It is not subjective at all as you can see if an impressionist painting is not right. By definition, impressionism is just like realism but the brush strokes are much more pronounced (more like leaving "impressions") on the surface; taking accurate depiction of light. Try to google "impressionism wikipedia."
@erin758 Жыл бұрын
@@DeliciousVicious777 - "Subjective" or "You can get away with not really knowing all the fundamentals" Nope. There are specific criteria for a painting or the technique applied to be classified as impressionistic. The founders of this movement were highly skilled painters capable of creating even the most realistic artworks. The comprehension of how to capture light and its impact on a scene is an objective skill. Additionally, factors such as color harmony and the precise sequence of adding, mixing, and applying paint to particular areas of the canvas are crucial aspects to consider.

i’ve been drawing since i was a toddler and my artist idol was claude monet, he fought for the freedom of art which is just incredible. he didnt let those rules control his imagination.

As a painter myself I often get sort of overwhelmed before starting a new project and often have to reference classic impressionism examples. It was really enjoyable to watch you work and the painting develop on the panel, it gives the feeling of "yes, this is how it's made". The moment where you added the darker blue to the sky then the lighter blue below that suddenly gave the painting distance was simple but magical.

This is the best video I have seen so far demonstrating Monet's technique. The only thing that could make it better would be to have text saying which color you are taking up on the screen. The speed is so fast I can't tell which blue you are choosing, and I think that's confusing for us beginners, to know which blue to choose for warm/cool,, for shadows, for different parts of the sky. If the name of the color was on the screen when your brush goes into the color on the palette that would be really helpful

If you want to paint like Monet, you must set your canvas in front of nature and learn to transpose nature’s range of light and shadow to pigment’s range. This video is about copying a painting that is Monet’s transposition of nature’s range. Nature’s range is like that of an 88 key keyboard… and pigment’s range is only from a couple of octaves worth of keys.

I'm guessing what he does is apply the paint thinly (which then dries fast) and then apply another color over it with soft brush strokes as to not mix it with the previous paint.

Out of interest, why don't you start with a white canvas? What's the thinking being having that background colour at the start? Keen to learn.
@PaintingWithSamir Жыл бұрын
Imprimatura is a painting technique that involves applying a thin, colored layer of paint on a canvas or panel before starting the actual painting. This initial layer is usually a warm, earthy color, such as burnt sienna, raw umber, or yellow ochre, and is used to establish the overall tonality and value of the painting. The imprimatura can serve as a foundation for subsequent layers of paint, providing a visual unity to the painting and creating a sense of depth and richness in the colors. It also helps to prevent the white canvas from showing through the paint layers and can make it easier to judge the values and color relationships of the subsequent layers.
