As a point of order, as they would say in Parliament, we, the public, do not elect a Prime Minister. After an election, the leader of the party who believes they can command a majority in the House goes to the Queen who then asks him/her to form a government and that person is then appointed as Prime Minister by the Queen. The Queen can, in theory, appoint anyone she likes as PM, it is her gift, not the gift of the people.
