I recently started learning Korean (thanks Steve for inspiring me to do this). Every time I feel like complaining about certain difficulties, I stop and think to myself, “Oh man, you really are so lucky. You do not need to learn your native Russian as a foreign language.”

🤣I learned Traditional Chinese in school as our foreign language for 13 years. I'm not complaining about learning Russian, which I'm learning now. Korean, Japanese, and Arabic script, now, those are things I'd rather not touch.

I really enjoy doing the whole “using familiar things to navigate the unfamiliar language” concept with books as well. Finding translations of books you’ve already read allows you to focus a little bit more on the vocabulary and use of the language rather than worry so much about comprehending the plot.

Daria is great. Her slow Russian vlogs were the first comprehensible input I could understand. That was almost three years ago. Since then, my Russian has improved immensely, I've made friendships with Russian speakers, and even spent last summer traveling around eastern Ukraine speaking Russian with locals. I continue to study. I work with a tutor online several times a week. Most of the Russian material I watch now is just regular Russian language material, like the news etc. but I still watch Daria's material because it's fun and interesting. Good luck everyone. Russian is great and it can be learned!

I'm now starting Russian as it's my 2022 language. The last 7 months of 2021 was for Portuguese and that was easy because I used Lingq to read the Harry Potter series and it has been a lot of fun! For Russian I decided to go word for word in Dostoievski's Crime and Punishment on Lingq, given that I've read that book in English in high school. I know nothing but I enjoy reading it because Lingq enables me to do so. So my point is that people don't need a high level of any language to read a book if comprehension is the goal and patience and consistency is there then do whatever you want!

Hi Steve, I'm so pleased you had Daria on you channel. She happens to be my very first teacher whose videos I had been watching when I started Russian 14 months ago. By the way Steve, your French is something else !!! I am French so to give you a 10 out of 10 is de rigueur ! I am totally in agreement with both of you as to the use of stories or cartoons in the process of learning a new language. Russian cases can be remembered much better this way and you increase your vocabulary at the same time. I also have 2 Russian ladies I speak to every week. One speaks French and English and the other Spanish and English. We normally spend one hour speaking Russian and one hour speaking their preferred language. My Russian being still at its very early stage, I like learning, reading and reciting fairy tales and practising these very difficullt verbs of motion and cases. I am 59 and Russian is now my fourth language and naturally I do suffer from language attrition especially in French. I would like to wish you all the very best on your Arabic studies. You are an amazement to the whole international world of language learners and becoming its icon. Regards. Michel

Not that I continued learning it (for the moment, as am focusing on other languages), but all the tips you've mentioned are very helpful. Compelling content as well as motivation are vital for learning a foreign language, yet people are, unfortunately, changeable creatures and for that reason it is important to develop the discipline first. Almost everybody feels enthusiastic at the very beginning of a language learning journey, but over time that feeling fades away somewhere. For that reason, first, a person should clarify a real purpose of learning a language and then schedule specific time and place for learning different aspects of that language. When you have "why" in your mind, you keep your motivation live and when you set a specific time and spot for a language learning you don't let any other things distract you from the process as total concentration is necessary for effectiveness of learning. As for emotions, they enrich a language learning process incredibly. Even when you have an ordinary conversation, emotions play an important role in making the conversation extraordinary and memorable. Anything is learmed better with better mood and pleasure)))

Language book club. For Russian especially, join VK, a music or a club of your interests. I'm in a music club there and I'm not even learning Russian. 😏 (learning Hebrew, it's an Israeli music club... But most are Russian speakers who don't use English, so we have to use Hebrew... so you'll have more options.

Daria's American English is excellent. With a couple of focused changes she could eliminate something like half her remaining Russian accent (and I see this so often in native Russian speakers): -Stop changing "-ing" to "in". -Open/ broaden/ relax those short "a"s.
@talideon
@talideon 2 жыл бұрын
Replacing '-ing' with '-in' is even common amongst native speakers. Personally, I don't see any great need for people to ditch their accents unless they want to.
