I am teaching salsa here in Mexico as a solid intermediate. I am going to be dependent on youtube videos for my own learning because no one in my town does this except at the beginner level. I can't imagine my life without salsa. I started when I was 51 (!) and have been dancing for 10 years now. It has changed my life.

Learn salsa 10x faster. Yes, your video definitely resonates, thank you for your inspiring talk. Absolutely agree that regular practice and stretching yourself outside your comfort zone is the way to improve and make progress. My aim is to become a competent dancer, and being a slow learner I have to practise a lot, by myself, doing this every day as part of my exercise routine. My wife gets a bit cross, so I suffer for my art!I wouldn't though dismiss the value of repetition. Obviously you pay special attention to techniques that cause difficulty. At the moment scoop turns are a challenge, so they are getting some special attention. I'm having to dig deep to get my head around these! PS it's almost ironic that to be competent at partner dancing you need to do a lot of practice by yourself!
@thedancedojo4 жыл бұрын
repetition is vital, but you have to repeat the right things or you'll engrain poor movement patterns and bad habits. Keep it up Terry. Your work ethic will take you far and those who have to dig deeper to learn will see the pay off. It's a bit ironic on the surface but then if you think of any skill or relationship it makes sense: you must be happy with yourself before you can be happy with someone else. You need the individual skills to shine as a couple. Partnership strength is founded on individual strength. 🙌🏽 -Robin

Hey man, great content! I’m just starting and was wondering what shoes/sneakers you’re wearing at 4:18. It seems like it doesn’t inhabit you from spinning and also doesn’t look to flashy like many ballroom shoes. I’m really trying to upgrade from my pair of adidas sneakers which are a little hard to spin in (my right knee definitely feels a little sore after a class of right turn repetitions). So any shoe recommendations would be great!Thanks again for the tips and sharing your journey!
@thedancedojo5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching man! I've always danced in sneakers myself (used to it from breakdancing). The ones I'm wearing are Native Shoes (the apollo moc). What you need is a simple sole that's not too grippy on most floors. @fuego_shoes also made a sneaker for dancers but haven't tried it yet since they've been out of stock. Burju shoes amd Gfranco prob also have some more casual shoe models you might like (no heel, made for social dancing). And well, if you're in a grippy shoe just don't force yourself to do turns, keep it simple to protect those knees! -Robin

Something most video salsa instructors don't (dare?) mention: when you want to determine a dancer's level you look at basically one thing: their feet, their footwork, because that (along with body movement) is where the flavor, the "sabor" is. When people say "Wow!" after watching someone dance salsa, it's almost always because of their footwork. It's never, ever, because of their arm work or their turn patterns, because they tend to come off as either something choreographed beforehand, or memorized and practiced a million times. The footwork (and the body movement), again, is where the sabor is, and is where you show the world how much you have the clave and the tumbao running through your veins, and how much you really and truly FEEL the music. Armwork is a superficial decoration that for the uninitiated may look cool, but the veteran dancers know that the real soul of the dance is definitely not in the arms or turns. Unfortunately, however, arm work and turn patterns are the bread and butter of the dance schools, and are, apparently, what the "market" demands. That's so sad, since it will tend to lead to a long-term deterioration of salsa dancing and the boredom of everyone looking pretty much the same. The goal, as they say, or should say, is to become a dancer with your own unique look and style, and your own unique way of relating to the music, and how you express your uniqueness. Un abrazo.
@thedancedojo4 жыл бұрын
Again, William, you're so right on here. I think it's a natural step to begin with moves and turn patterns, because for many that may be the flash of inspiration that got them started in the first place, plus it's easier to see initial progress quicker. footwork and body movement is a long development cycle and is a mid to long term skill set. That said, it is the soul of the dance and as dancers mature they tend to realize that. All we can do is do our best to help people see that and develop themselves and the rest is up to them. Thanks for the comment. Curious, what's your background or experience with music and dance? -Robin

Hey Avy I think you misunderstood. I agree with you. I meant "imperfect" as in maybe it's not as long as your "ideal" practice time. My point is if in your mind you're thinking you need to practice for an hour to improve, don't decide not to practice just because you only have 10 mins that day. Do the 10 min practice and keep progressing! -Robin
