Thank you so much for saying this. It made me cry, because it is true. I was his main student (Vicky Oldham) and I'll be back after the holidays with some new lessons. I'm not nearly the natural talent he was, but I learned to sculpt enough to do it professionally. There are so many questions that come in all the time and I do have the answers to most because I worked with Chuck for decades (since I was 19, and I'm now 68. He passed away from an incurable lung illness in 2014). Thanks again for your heartfelt comment.

Glad to know that. I'll be trying to show a little tip or two every time I do the live stream also. Today I'll be showing how you can brush your oil-based clay to smooth out detail.

I just visited your website and love your work!! I also read what you said about Polymer Clay... I got the vibe from what you wrote that polymer clay is not ideal for larger work... I have been trying to change how people view polymer clay for the past 3 years. I do larger work then usual (up to 4 lbs in size so far, including armature) Very glad to find your channel, and to meet another clay artist!!

Just use vaseline or mineral oil in moderation and try to remove any excess when you're done because it will tend to change the consistency of the clay in the areas where you use it, or it can soften the clay and make it gummy or pasty... at least this is what happens with many clays I have used.

I was wondering how do you cure this type clay to harden it? Is it an air dry type clay or is it bake?

I use vaseline or baby oil as a smoother and it is wonderful. :D Thank you for the video!

Thanks for your idea. The modeling clay used in the demo is not water based... it is oil based, so you can't smooth it with water. Also, for this small size "maquette," no armature is needed.

I do have a workbook on my website with patterns to follow. You can use calipers or a proportional divider tool to get the proportions right... the workbook shows you how. Go to learnsculpture(dot)org to see it.

What kind of clay do u use? I see that it's very dense but at the same time easy to smooth

Really great videos. I used to sculpture in ceramics, mostly figures, and got tired of the legs breaking so much (without an armature). So now I'm doing bas relief, in oil clay, and finding some challenges with depth I'm trying to figure out. Do you have any videos about bas relief?
