Raised beds are great for people with disability. I have one in cement 35 ft long by 4 ft wide. It's perfect for me to plant in my wheelchair. It was made in a way that I can plant and grow anything I want. I grow pigeon peas which it's a tree to peppers. Awesome video. Loved and Subbed.

Wow, that gives me a picture of what I can try to do on a smaller scale. I saw this last week and today I added two more raised beds, now I have 3 that are just 4 X 8. I used treated pine that is 5 inches x 5 inches and stacked them two high. I want to add a 4 X 12 next for potatoes.

I don't know why people are complaining. It's a showpiece garden for a company and so of course they will make it look good so people associate a good image with the company. The narrator even explains you can just mound up soil to make the garden bed - and that costs nothing other than time. The key points of advertisement is the image, the relaxed and friendly music and just as he says "@ 3:55 To get your plants off to a great start..." the logo for his company appears. That is called association and conditioning. There are some generic gardening tips which are useful but yeah, it's an infomercial as they explain information while promoting their fertilizer.

Now I've been taught at the college level by people that worked at BBDO firm, I've taken advertising strategy and tactics, media planning and buying...but nowhere did they tell me mentioning a product is conditioning and association. I think you meant it's a logo for the brand. That's all it is. Hey look at this pile of crap. Brought to us by the good people of crapsville.

Anything to retain the soil works, from scrap concrete to lumber to railroad ties, etc. Even composite wood, made of recycled plastic and wood fiber are becoming more popular. Joe prefers non-treated, rot resistant lumber such as cedar. Pressure treated wood is less expensive and readily available but there is some debate around the safety of its use, especially if using these beds for edibles. Another more cost effective garden bed option is straw bales. www.milorganite.com/blog/garden-landscape/straw-bale-garden

This is my dream garden if you add a greenhouse, and a taller 8 ft high fence to keep out deer! Yes, cedar is expensive, tamarack is a bit cheaper, but still costly. I hope to build a couple raised beds from PT 2x8's (2 high), with 4x4 corner blocks and a wide cap board to sit on (for my bad back). I'm also putting welded hardwire mesh in the bottom to keep out ground varmints. I will also line the sides with professional landscape fabric to protect the wood and reduce copper leaching. They won't be cheap, but should last 10+ years. Thank you for the nice video!

They take a lot of water. Unless you have poor soil or have back issues it’s expensive and wasteful. Just get 2x6, or 2x8, to what ever length. Look up lasagna gardening. It’s cheap, and it works great. Add fall leaves as a weed blocker and it prevents splash from the ground on tomato leaves. Maple or ash leaves are best IMO. Just have fun. Be patient and never over fertilize ever.

Cedar 6X6's? I counted about a dozen beds, each taking ~9 6X6's each costing about 100 bucks, (Lowes estimate). That's $10,000.00 in lumber BEFORE we start working on soil, fertilizer, tools... I love the concept but who can afford this? #Millionairegardening

Look at the property. This is a hobby farm on a wealthy property that isnt designed to create income... This is a hobby farm where aesthetics meet pass-time. The same concept can be achieved by using reclaimed wood, wood from scrap pallets or by cutting down trees and splitting logs. Just like mentioned in the video, you can create a raised bed by mounding your dirt. The cost is what you make it.

For those of us who aren't millionaires there are a couple of options. Most real lumberyards will carry 4x4 untreated rough pine that runs about $12 for a 8ft 4x4 - as of 2019. They are rough but nothing a few hours of sanding won't fix. You can seal them with a polymerized linseed oil or pine tar - they're food safe. If you're going the PT route one neat trick I've seen is that you can line the walls with a HDPE plastic floor underlay - the stuff they use for radiant heating. It's a bit pricey but again, food safe. So if you go that way, you can varathane the wood, it'll stay looking nice and you don't have to worry about chemicals leaching into your soil.

This is a lovely garden, but the cost of building such beds is quite high. It would be outside the ability of many people to afford this. I use raised beds, Fir planks 2 inches wide and 10-12 feet long. They hold up pretty well unless they are in a wet area. Cedar is cost prohibitive.

Love your program, every episode is enlightening! While I've had some gardening experience, I've never grown my garden in raised beds. I'm now considering it for several reasons. The primary reason is that my new garden will be grown in a space where an old orange grove existed, you can only imagine what remains in the ground from the care taking of the fruit trees. The sentimental part of this story is that this property is the very place where I learned to garden as a child with my grandmother! I was blessed to have two sets of grandparents who showed me the benefits of having a garden! My question, is it more economical to have raised beds, or is it better to amend the soil? Which is more sustainable? Would I need to amend the soil every year due to seepage? The grove has been gone now for 10 years, is contamination something I even need to worry about? I would love to grow as organically as possible, oh and I live in Central Florida. Thank you!

Four feet is actually too wide for a raised bed, because even though you can reach across, you strain your back reaching to the centre. We have an extensive raised bed garden, operate a small seed company and lead garden workshops. We find that anything over 40 inches becomes hard to work, so we limit out beds to that width. The rest is all good advice, we think.

There are advantages to raised bed but also disadvantages. If you don't have an endless supply of water in a dry year the plants will die. It is almost impossible to use a rototiller in them. Nice heavy lumber like this cedar will hold together pretty good but most folks don't have the kind of cash this type of bed cost so they use 2 inch wide lumber which quickly falls apart leaving an unsightly mess. For most family sized food production gardens in ground garden are the most practical.
@syalutsa
@syalutsa 5 жыл бұрын
Yes wood does rot out, but if you are so dry that watering is an issue, two inch boards will last up to ten years. We are in a wet, rainy, icy climate, and ours last seven, then we replace them. You don't want to rototill, as any type of digging disrupts the natural soil ecology. No till is better. We are all learning as we go.

Milorganite, 10-10-10, and gypsum. This is perfect for tomatoes. Just get a 20-30 lb bag of 10-10-10, a 40-50 pound bag of Milorganite, 20 lbs of gypsum. Mix them together good. Get some 5 gallon storage buckets with a tight lid. This will last for many years. It’s cheap, and the plants will grow great. If your gonna buy tomato fertilizer and on the back ingredients label if it doesn’t have calcium listed don’t buy it. Tomatoes need calcium. Calcium is in gypsum. If you got potted plants and they need calcium fast use lime. If you use gypsum yearly you won’t have to worry at all about calcium.

in 2015 this would have been financially viable. In 2020 a pine 2x10x8 = $16. A 6x6x12 Cedar post = $160 each f (10 times the price). 8 of those to make 1 bed would be $1280. Then you are going to need to fill the bed with a soil mix for between 1-3 cubic yards. That is going to run you another $300+/-. So if you want to spend $1500/bed vs. many other affordable approaches like even concrete or 2x lumber would be better and more cost effective and would dramatically reduce the start up costs of a raised bed garden. There is no question that this would outlast 2x lumber but if it is pressure treated you can get 10-15 years out of that wood (more if taken care of). 5-10 years out of untreated wood and 20+ years with a concrete alternative. Cedar is naturally resistant to fungus/decay/rot. However it depends greatly on the cedar used. We call Red Cedar a Cedar but it is not really. It is the most commonly used cedars but it has the least amount of active compounds to protect it. So still a long lasting approach it will eventually deteriorate also (20-30 years). So if also depends on how long you plan on staying in 1 location. Don't overspend on raised beds if you plan on moving within 10 years.

Great question! No need to change out soil. It doesn’t go bad unless it gets contaminated somehow. But otherwise, you just need to refresh it with some extra compost or soil amendments once or twice a year, and remember to include some slow-release fertilizer as well. Soil in containers that have made it through an entire growing season have likely used up all the nutrients as well.

having ageing great-great-grandparents I have spent time for them to still get out to do their garden the soil is great to grow with here just the downfall is the weeds did remove the soil and put down the gravel and industrial landscaping fabric them wash rock more fabric with the rock on top them put the raised beds on top of this did find out how to control the weeds throw the winter I did by the spring had most of the beds were ready to use have power to each bed and water as well too if we need to plug something in we can without having to use a cord same as the watering holes so far not weeds in them and if we have a lot of rain the drainage with the rock is great no wey ground for them to walk in have 2 rows that were the first built to close to each other we could not get the tracker down the rows the exit ones we did just easier to clean the beds when the can use the tracker we build a greenhouse that way too all we did differently was when we water the plants the water wast drainage into a pit and can be reused storage we have a root cellar for storage and have a building as we to take care for shipping the vegetable to the market it's our 2nd year with the greenhouse we are gowning all year round now have 12 people employed now and hoping to build 2 or 3 more greenhouses have more outside raised beds this year too

If I live in an area that has real sand ground..should I use a barrier to keep moisture in the raised bed??..like some sort of plastic? Maybee with a few holes for a little drainage???

Hi, Robert - Water should be able to flow out of the bottom of your raised bed. Some people layer cardboard beneath the bed structure to help with water retention, but that cardboard will break down so quickly it’s really not a worthwhile step. Creating healthy soil in your raised bed will help retain moisture and nutrients for your plants. Check out this soil “recipe” to get raised beds off to a rich and robust start. www.milorganite.com/blog/garden-landscape/top-5-reasons-garden-raised-bed

YESSSS! Raised beds for People growing MOST produce are the best. Not sure about corn??
@MilorganiteFertilizer
@MilorganiteFertilizer 6 жыл бұрын
Corn can be grown in a raised bed, but requires dense planting with enough plants to ensure even pollination. A large raised bed that's at least six feet long and four feet wide provides enough room to grow one block of corn. Another option is to grow a dwarf corn variety since it doesn't grow as tall and shade out other plants in a small garden space.

I built around 10 raised beds from reclaimed cedar decking. Planning to grow roses, cutting flowers, and veggies. what's a good soil mix and how much compost should I use? I'm thinking 50% high quality fish compost, 30% garden mix, and 10% peat. Thoughts?

According to the US Compost Council, strive for 30% compost / organic material by volume, which translates to about 5% by weight. But I like the volume guide. Easier to eyeball.

or store bought soil. Do you guys have any idea how much wasted time I spent buying such products as Kelloggs Garden Soil for Vegetables and Flowers, only to find it is really mulch. What soil are you buying for a raised bed? I want to buy a bag of soil, come home, put it in the bed, and plant seeds.

Hi is it safe to use tires for planning?
@MilorganiteFertilizer
@MilorganiteFertilizer 4 жыл бұрын
Joe Gardener does not recommend planting in tires. If you must do it, do it only for a season or two at most. Tires are a petroleum-based product. Their rubber degrades in the heat and moisture, and the chemicals incorporate into your soil. They may be convenient or look kitschy and fun. It may keep a tire out of the landfill, sure. But there are more drawbacks to using tires than there are benefits. There’s a reason that most landfills prohibit tires. If garbage shouldn’t be subjected to decomposing tire rubber, neither should your family’s food.
