For right handers, aren't you working across and on top of or over what you've already done? Risking damage and dirt. So what you're saying is no matter if you're left or right handed you always work from right to left.

No, that is not correct. Left handers do the exact opposite of right handers. We feel there is no wrong way to needlepoint as long as you enjoy what you are doing. In the coming year we hope to load many videos of needlepoint instruction and fun tips. There are good reasons to needlepoint a particular way. Perhaps we will have a video on why we suggest these ways. But back to your question. Needlepoint wears from the back forward, sounds strange as one would think that a pillow gets our back rubbed up against it the most. but that pushing is rubbing the threads on the back as well. This is why we want the back to be super strong with few tails (wonky loose threads) and the stitches connected properly. When we do the continental stitch as a right hander, moving always from right to left and top to bottom the connection is best with the stitches. Just do a few rows alternating moving right to left and then left to right. Then look at the back and you will see that the connection is not as good as turning the canvas and always moving right to left. You have a point about your right hand moving across the stitched area, but if you always move from left to right then you wont be able to do the scoop or sewing stitch. More about that later. hope this was helpful. Check out our new homepage MyNeedlepoint.com where we house all our needlepoint divisions. Cheers, Russell

WOW! 40 count canvas is quite the detail. If you stitched with that you will love a painted design and the meditative mode that needleppoint offers - cheers, Russell

Russell Palmer I have never worked on a painted canvas. The canvas I like to work with is 18 or higher mesh. I have worked on 14 mesh which is the size that is readily available at our local craft store. I think that the basketweave stitch is fun and keeps me interested in the project I’m working on.

Garden Glory - my opinion only, the piece has a more complete look this way. If you are using the "use less yarn" technique, it shows on the front as well as the feel of the fabric. Though subtle, the video technique above truly is better and more professional looking. 😊shelley
