To be honest, you really didn't clear things up. Totally understand your explanation, however what you didn't answer is, what way do I install the filter that says Airflow when OEM says UP? My point being, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that the airflows in opposite direction and all that the Toyota Up markings indicate is the proper installation of OEM marked products however they chose to design their airflow direction and filters.

A cabin air filter with just the text UP on the side is installed with the arrows pointing UP. A cabin air filter with the text that says air flow can point up, down, or to the front or back of the car. This all depends on the installation process. Some of the OEM filters will just say UP but the air flow is going down through the filter not up. When a filter just says UP text on the side it doesn't refer to the airflow.

One way to determine the airflow direction is to look at the old filter. The side that is dirtier will be the side where the air is flowing in to the filter, the cleaner side will be the side where the air is flowing away from the filter.

Toyotas airflow goes down. Cabin filters upper side is dirty.

Yes you are correct but some filter do not mention the airflow and just say UP. When they just say UP they are not following the airflow. They are just to be installed with the arrow pointing UP. I agree it is a poor user experience. Purchase your next filter at: www.filterheads.com/

For everyone asking which way airflow goes in their specific vehicle...just take the old filter out; the airflow is from dirty side to clean side. Or, just take the filter out, start the car and put your hand in the filter area to feel the airflow. (Just don't stick your finger in the blower motor....)

It all depends on your make and model. If it says up on your housing door and the filter does not mention air flow then install with the arrow pointing up.

That would be dependent on your vehicle. An easy way to check would be to look at the filter that is already in your vehicle. Whichever side is catching all the debris will be the side the airflow is moving through. So, if the top of your old filter is where all the debris lay, you know that the airflow direction is going downwards. We hope this provides more clarity.

If your filter has the test AIR FLOW with arrows on the side the arrows point down. If the side of the filter just says UP with arrows then the filter is installed with the arrows pointing up.
