Yes it can make your HVAC work like crap. I had poor heat Jan-Mar when I got my new (34 miles odo) Honda SUV until I pulled out the cabin filter just to see how to do it. It had been parked outside before I got it. The crap that was restricting air flow was seeds from trees. Blowing out the filters with a shop vac fixed the problem. I suggest checking the filter every fall, late spring and after a trip where you drive through a forest or a corn field in the early summer.

Last year I bought a 21,500 mile, 2011 Toyota iQ and read the handbook. The cabin filter cover was hidden under the carpet , just below the passenger’s right knee on the front bulkhead ( right-hand drive ). I had to lie on the floor , with my legs sticking out of the car in order to loosen the cover. The filter came out absolutely filthy. It could not have been changed for years. I put a new Bosch filter in and will check it after 6 months. Though with the small mileage during stay at home, I expect it to be cleanish.Pushing filter back in the slot was difficult, but replacing the cover was the most difficult part of all , for an elderly person.

Most auto shops offer a pre-purchase inspection, even if they don't advertise it. Here in MN most places charge like 25-30 bucks to go over the whole car and give you a list of anything that is worn/may need replacing in the near future. If you are really interested in a car it's a great investment.. because if they come back and say hey, this is broken or needs to be replaced and it will cost 1k.. you can either walk away from the deal and save yourself a headache, or you can negotiate that information in to the price of the car. And if it comes back all clear, you spend 30 bucks to put your mind at ease about your big investment.

That is gross lol, I'd be disgusted to know I breathed that air for so long. My buddy found a dead mouse and nest inside his Jeep's blower motor.

I checked mine a month back; had a little bit of dust on it, but it still looked good. So I blew it out with compressed air & threw it back in. I will probably change it for a new one next year.😎👍

What scotty means by a "galvanic response" is called *"Dissimilar metal corrosion." Short answer: Metals dont like to mix with one another in solid form. They corrode and rot quickly A more detailed nerdy explanation down below👇 It is a considerably poor fundamental mechanical practice to force different kinds of metals into pressed contact with one another. They have different amounts of particles per atom. Different relative charges to one another due to the different electron quantities. It's the exact same thing as having a static charge. More concentrated electrons. And When they make contact, it does the same thing. But it's a slower and continuous process. Those electrons mix, the atoms start to bond or unbond with each other, or even themselves. This is called "electrolytic corrosion" It's why you don't puncture your car's skin to install something metal without taking EXTREME care. Most car skin is made of aluminum. So if you use an aluminum attachment that contacts the skin, it shouldn't really do anything. But if you use a steel attachment, or brass, or iron, or copper, or whatever else, the mixing of elements in solid form causes all kinds of electrolytic malarky Even just securing a steel bolt with a brass nut or using a brass washer or snap ring will cause this kind of accelerated corrosion. If you HAVE to mix metals, install some kind of plastic or silicon blocker in between. Like a plastic washer. Or if you want metal, use a 2nd washer of the material of the surface you want to protect. That will be your sacrificial washer. It will corrode where it touches the dissimilar metal. But it WILL NOT spread that corrosion to the valuable surface. It's like Jim Bruer's hilarious video on mixing liquors not being a good thing. You legit can approach metallurgy the same way. Just a pro tip for you rookies or intermediates out there. ;)

So, Dave, did I do a terrible thing putting my license plate on my presumably aluminum tailgate using stainless steel machine screws? This is not a facetious question, btw, I’ve had my license plates stolen in rest areas before while traveling interstate; so I’m now in the habit of buying non-standard driver pan-head machine screws (ie not slotted/Phillips head or hex) for my plates. (Next guy who steals MY plates is gonna show up with a 120 piece bit set, at least!!! 😂) So am I inviting rust on to my tailgate by using stainless into aluminum? (With blue LocTite on the threads, if that factors into the equation)

I agree with you, Scotty. I did mine during the pandemic, with only forty-some thousand kilometers, it needed replacing.

My in-cabin air filter gets dirty pretty quick living in Las Vegas. So does my regular air filter. I usually change them every 6 months.

Easy to do in my car, I change it once a year along with my engine filter. Simple & inexpensive.

Hi Scotty! After I cut the plastic behind the glovebox to open the cabin air filter slot there had not been a filter for the last twelve years. 2011 Chevy Malibu. Top that off, nobody sells the filter. I'm stumped! :D
@alexkokkola4 жыл бұрын
Probably a good idea to check the Cabin air filter every 2 months or so. You can find some really cheap online, and like you said for most cars, it's really easy to find them, so there really is no excuse. Good video Scotty.

I bought a used car about 6 months ago. The filter hadn't been changed for 5 years. It didn't look pretty once I got it out. That's for sure. I replaced it with a cheap(er) alternative. The good thing about cheaper ones is that instead of spending an awful a lot of money on ONE filter, you can replace the cheaper ones every 6-12 month without crying over the money.

I tell people in Cincinnati Ohio, this very thing all the time, but they dont want to spend the money to change the cabin filter. I dont understand this!🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just changed mine. I took a picture of before and after and also write the date and mileage on the filter element before i changed it. The reason i change it is because the AC is not blowing enough cold air and also could smell the outside exhaust gas smell from following behind a smoky truck.

When I got my first car, I replaced the cabin filter and when I opened up the compartment to get them out, there was leaves, pinestraw, and dirt absolutely everywhere and the filters were smothered in the stuff. I had to take a vacuum and get my hand in there to get everything out. Guess I got lucky nothing happened to the system.

At mazda dealership they will charge $30 to change it, not too bad compared to others, however on Mazda's the filter takes about 1 minute to change from opening hood to unclipping cover to the filter. The cabin filter though you have to disconnect the battery so you don't short out a sensor, and then you have to reach way in under the dash and behind the fan to put the filters. Still wouldn't pay someone else to do it, haha.

I'm a mechanic from the UK, its a normal thing to do a service which is basically changing the oil etc but the cabin filter is one of the main things we do. The only exception is the new fiat 500's as you have to take the steering rack out in order to get to it so obviously we charge extra for them. Moral of the story. Dont buy a fiat 500 🤣

I've wondered for years, why does the cabin air filter get dirtier than the engine air filter?
@brucemorris38304 жыл бұрын
Because, I think, most modern cars have the engine air intake pointing to the ground, as opposed to the HVAC/cabin air intake which points up and is right behind the windshield wipers. So way more crap from trees etc falls into the cabin air ducts than ever gets sucked upwards into the engine air intake?
@njsongwriter2 жыл бұрын
Because the air flows downward on the cabin filter.
