@@PhilipWesterSpend an hour on Zillow and there are houses all over the USA for significantly cheaper than 320k. There are new houses in Texas for 137-200k. In Ohio they’re also cheaper. You can also build a small house, under 800sq ft for 200k or less in many areas. If you buy a house for over 300, that’s a choice, not a requirement.

@@BadMannerKoreaOK, maybe values are different in the U.S. than in Sweden, but in Sweden, you generally don't buy a house unless you have a family or at least a partner. Houses cost more to maintain and electricity and heating costs more for a house as well, compared to an apartment. 800 square foot apartments are basically unheard of in Sweden. Most houses are 2 bedroom, 1 kitchen, a bathroom, 1 living at the very least, often two stories with even more than that. It's much more economical to live in an apartment as a single person or even a couple without any children.

Because things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, depending on what they deem “valuable”. There’s actually nothing special about the table to anyone not interested in it For example: my former SIL collected M&M memorabilia, which she loooooooved. She’d brag how much this or that piece was “worth”. To another M&M collector, sure. To me? I’d throw that 💩 in the trash in 2 seconds and charge her money for wasting my time 😂

This is why I told my daughter if I pass to make sure not to just give away my antique furniture. A few of my pieces are worth a few thousand. My best find so far was a mid century modern made in the USA Henderon lacquer dresser with the mirror. I paid eighty buck for the set. Last one I saw at a small antique auction sold for 2,400 in worse condition without the mirror. My favorite piece is a late 1800 century hand cut pine pie safe with the original hand punched tin panels. The patina on them is beautiful as well as the rather unique punch pattern. I paid around 450 which is more than my usual but I’d been dying to find a pie safe FOREVER! Honestly it was probably still a steal as I think it’s probably worth closer to 800-1000. Just love the character, artistry,history, and longevity of antique furnishings. What a great find so happy that lady was able to find such a gem!!

@@bevanbuckwheatshea5520 Yes, while that is a factor, I’ve been to enough estate sales/ auctions, antique auctions houses to know most pieces with any real value do indeed sell. Certain pieces are highly coveted and hard to find, the pie safe is a great example. Especially, traditional late 1800’s to the early 1900’s pieces are highly sought after. I actually drove nearly five hours out of my way and got in a bidding war for mine. Being knowledgeable about what you are purchasing and where you are purchasing does play a factor. Someone coming to my garage sale or on fb marketplace might not pay 2,400 for my dresser, but I know with a high probability someone at a smaller antique auction would. I could reasonably get that and only pay the auction house a small percentage should I decide to sell it at some point. I am also rather young, in my early thirties, in reality the solid wood and construction, I could reasonably keep my pieces another 40/50 years. Antique pieces in proper condition with very little wear or degradation, unlike prefab IKEA, I can almost guarantee will be worth at the very least what I paid; most likely more.

one of the first shows I watched was about a woman who found a Paul Revere chocolate pot in a box at estate sale for 25 dollars. An antiques dealer had already looked in the boxes and had made a point to tell her there was nothing valuable in them!! 250k later, she was the one laughing!!

I hope the lady who sold it for $25 never views the show or this short! 😮

@@mattg4836 seriously, I would, too. I got 2 old vintage Marshall tube amplifiers once from an old widow of a professional guitarist... She put them on facebook and when I inquired, she convinced me just to take them. I sold one of them 3 years later for $2,400 and I remembered where she lived... I drove to her house with 1200 bucks and said "here's your half". She just broke down when I gave it to her...

If it wasn’t refinished it would probably be worth a lot more.
@leslielandberg5620Ай бұрын
That is often the case. Perhaps the buyer removed the finish to authentic original finish (maybe hand rubbed or waxed) and resold it for thousands more.

There is a story of a guy who was watching RoadShow and he sees a first nations blanket, and thinks "I have something that is similar to that". Long story short it sells at auction for $1.5M. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5SqnYZmapdmabM

That's what dreams are made of. I do have one antique chair, but I've never looked for signatures. It's put together with pins and had such an old piece of tapestry on it that it needs to be redone but I'm scared to do so in case it's worth something. I'm going to have to look again to see if there's a mark on it. Even if it isn't something as fancy as this end table, it's very nicely made with no metal parts.

Certainly don't touch your alter until you've had it appraised and looked at cuz you can be throwing away a fortune but it may be nothing but you never know. Good luck to you

Everytime I see antique roadshow I think of the dirty but unique twin beds I bought for 15$ in a fleamarket. On the headboard was a large,very impressive, fancy script label of African ( cant remember now,but gorgeous)wood, ..after several years in the basement and a weak moment of clearing out..they were given away. Little did I know, exporting hardwoods from Africa was banned in the 70s.. Some years later I saw the exact label on the exact same kind of twin bed ,in theEuropean Roadshow..... _$60,000- 65,000_ At half a million profit,I wonder if Clare made an effort to share a bonus w/"the lady"?

Its insane how much a name adds value. Sure its probably handcrafted and some of the best out there but surely plenty of other people could do the same but since they dont have a name worthy of recognition its worth the cost of labor and material
