my 72yr old mom a big fan. I managed to get tickets in Seattle, It was busy, and great fun. I saw one of the Twins, and when he was done talking with some people. I told him my mom was a big fan, an could he come an say Hi, he said just a minute, went an got his brother, they came over and treated her like their mom. She was overwhelmed. They’re both sincere and all the excitement you’ve seen them as. Throughout the day, they spread their joy

I totally agree that timing is key. Also, audience is even more key! From all of these I have watched where they go to auction I have learned that much of the auction business at this level is making sure all the right types of buyers are there at auction time. So I agree you need the right timing of the market and the right timing of having all the buyers ready to buy.
@drunkenmasterii32502 жыл бұрын
The price of things like that always depends on if some people want it. All you need is two really rich people being present or represented at the same auction fighting for it and suddenly you just add 200k to the price because it’s rare both party know it won’t be on the market for a while if ever after that and for some 200k is not more than 20$ for regular folks. The market dictates the bottom line, not how much it can fetch.

At a yard sale, many people just want stuff gone and sometimes people buy stuff, both not having any idea what it's worth. Back in the day, it was out with old and in with the new. Sometimes people do know what they are buying. They bargain and it is what it is. So, yes that person didn't get the market value of what they were selling. But did they feel screwed at the time? Probably not. Now with internet research, stumbling across a true bargain is quite rare and almost miraculous, because most people have a set idea of value that they've seen something listed for online.
@madclerk14 жыл бұрын
Auction houses typically just add whatever percentage they use on TOP of the final hammered down auction price. That's where they make their money. And since high end places, like Sothebys, auction off very expensive stuff, their percentage add on makes them LOTS of money.

Some people just can’t help themselves and destroy value. Friend inherited a Winchester Model 73 (value about 6 to 10k). I offered 6k but he thought he could get more if he “cleaned it”. I said don’t you will kill the value (I collect guns) but he is a know it all cause he is a engineer. Like three months later asked if I wanted to buy it for 6 still and I said yeah. I went to pick up and he had sanded all the wood and refinished using a different color and sand blasted the metal and painted it silver. I said not a chance I am not interested. He confessed he made a mistake and 5 other people had turned down purchasing after his restoration. Some people just have to destroy stuff to learn I guess.

In fact, I remember watching this this very episode when it originally aired in 1997. That said, I feel they were a little disingenuous here. They had no qualms revealing what the buyers premium was, yet, for whatever reason, they failed to tell us what the sellers premium was(the percentage the auction house charged the lady), nor did they reveal what their fee was. Either tell us all, or nothing.
