Music theory guy here. Essentially what you described is a Secondary Leading Tone. A passing chord where the diminished chord will resolve on the chord a semitone above or below it. I.E C# Dim to Dmaj and so on. Extensions of the secondary leading tone will make it even crispier

remember, when you play with diminished 7th chords, there is one really sick quality they have You can turn any diminished 7th chord into a dominant chord by dropping one of those notes (doesn't matter which) a single semitone. dominant chords are magic because they have a major sound, but have some of the instability of the diminished chord. they're wonderful for hanging onto a moment of tension that needs to be released

For any metal people here, it's also super easy to incorporate dim7 arpeggios when playing in harmonic minor or Phrygian dominant, because all four notes are already naturally occurring in the scale.

Bro, just picked up your channel from the algorithm from your bass video. I'm a self-taught producer of 16 years now (specifically FL Studio). Your vids are such an amazing resource! I'm bewildered by the brevity of them and how you capture complex concepts by teaching in motion with examples from your music. There's a ton of different ideas taught in each of them in such a short amount of time. Truly the top education : time investment contender on this platform. Thank you!

And if you want to get a little more deliberate as to where you are going you can move just one of the notes in a diminished chord and make it a dominant 5 of the following chord makes it really convenient to just change keys for a sec and then you can just wiggle your way back or whatever. Diminished chords are easily my favorite.

Just a quick note about the °7 chord, if you raise the 7th up by a half step, you get a half diminished chord (notated as Ø: example CØ). Really good for introducing for transitioning into a really crunchy chords. Here's an example: DØ, Db7alt, C△), they're also great for turnarounds in minor keys

Diminished chords are also great for modulations since they're sort of like "sneaky" dominant7 chords (sharpen any note in a dom7 chord and you get a dim7) then resolve to the new tonic! Boooooom!

About diminished chords sounding "scary" for people, I think it's because many of us (me included) fail to realize that tension is NOT always about being scary, it's about the dynamics. You can write a happy and easygoing (and not scary at all) song, but it wouldn't be so interesting without the tension. And diminished chords are a very easy way to add that tension to the music (cause they are just stacked b3 intervals, which are dissonant) even for someone who doesn't now much about music theory☺

C# dim is just A major 7th without the A, making it a very simple choice to play before D minor. Actually most of these "in between chords" can be traced back to being either 5 major - 1 minor or 4 minor - 1 major progressions, which in fact are mirror images of each other

most of the songs i write nowadays have some diminished chord, they're too good at making us feel uneasy versions of otherwise easy feelings. in this video you went from C to C#° to Dm and it feels like anticipation but if you do C to C° to Dm it feels like hearbreak, add a 6th to the Dm and you invoke instant feelings of almost grief, it's magic. edit: i feel like these types of chords are worthy a lot of conversation cause they break a barrier that feels unbreakable in songwriting. same goes to half diminished chords, for those who don't know, half diminished is when you get a diminished chord and place the 7th a half-step up, it can also be called a minor 7th chord with a flat 5th. these are great at summoning otherwise unusable chords, like doing Cmaj7 into Em7b5 then A7b13 then Dm, shit is jazzyyyy
