i really like this opening because as he says it's flexible and you can decide after Bb2 to attack either on the king's side or queen's side, it's a pretty cool opening to be fair and even if it's risky you can't exactly tell your opponent what you are going to play, so i find it nice

My grandpa taught me chess, but was always intimidated to play, cause I felt like I was way too stupid. Just in these last 1-2 months or so I felt a pull towards chess, and found this channel. Turns out it's not stupidity - you just need to invest time, energy, like every hobby (for me it is). Today got my first ever win with a 400 robot by playing King's Indian - yeah I know, it's not much, but it's honest work. And certainly it was a huge dopamine hit for me. @@adamfor5048 you should try playing rated games, from my experience bots elos are highly inflated, but also at the 1400-1600 bot elos (which play like a 1000-1200 real player), they no longer make simple one move blunders, and those bots are extremely resilient, they will defend incredibly well and wear you down, but real players aren't that resilient and make some mistakes bots wouldn't make, it's really fun

You might feel "messy" because of the closed nature of a lot of the positions and the weird development of your white bishop. I'm hyper aggro so I feel similarly but it does become aggressive, it just needs a little bit more patience than you (or I) might be used to. I find the more I play it, the more that awkward rotation works for me.

A Croat guy called hanging pawns goes into better detail. There are some bad moves gotham chose for white while playing as black like the light bishop. I find it best to only choose to move a pawn on move 3, this allows castle on move 4 (exapmle 1.d4 Kf6 2. c4 h6 3. Kc3 Bg7 now decide if you should castle or go e6) then after ive pushed the pawn AND caslted because king saftey, i go a5 then Ka6 then Qe8 then push kingside pawns wherever possible. Then point of KI is usually to dimantle kings safter via an attack on his pawns protecting the king (usually the king is kingside castle)

By watching this video, and using only this opening, from a plateau of 900, I climbed to 1000 in one day and one sitting. That combination of the knight hiding the discovered attack from the "fianchettoed" bishop can be really useful. It felt amazing. Admittedly however, I seem to have dropped back down in one or two bad nights.

This one also relevant for me. This was a system I tried learning and using many years ago. One upon a time I had a book (actually, I still have it (c) 1975) by Larry Evans on the Reti system (which is similar, but not identical, I know). I need to get back to this and try it again some. I did always find it hard to decide what to do (how to attack) once I got the basic setup. I need to practice/try it of course.

@@mg0790 That's still really good, 400 in 4 months is a large increase, and you might stagnate for a while, but you've only played for 6 months to a year(idk how long you played), so if you participate in a few tournaments and do a few more puzzles, you should be able to pass through the 1100 milestone easily.

I started learning king's indian attack (white opening) recently, starting with e4, and quickly learned why starting with e4 is maybe not the best idea for beginner/intermediate. Why? You play e4 as first move you leave black the option to play d5 in response, which is now the scandinavian defense. Once that move is on the board you have to address it and you are now no longer playing the KIA line. So it seems if you want to start with e4 you really should also know the scandi. Additional complexity. Starting as advised in video here avoids that divergence from your plan and you can continue normally as your e4 has a defender.

Thanks Levy, been trying to improve for the last year or so. Tried caro khan, sicilian, scandinavian... was still lucky to win 50%+. With Kings Indian I'm way up in the 70%+ if not 80%+. I have no idea why this system works for me but it does (especially just before the end game after trading knights and bishops seems to be where I always gain an advantage.). Could you do a video on the lines that might make it easier to understand WHY it works so well please?

First off great job on your content Levy - I really feel like I learned a ton from it and you are the by far easiest to understand high elo creator out there - at least in my book. Having played around with Kings Indian Defense / -Attack / Pirc for a while now and finding it very helpful to get similar structures in a lot of my games (at least early on) I'd love to hear from you if you think there are other openings that resemble each other in this way for both sides that a fairly new player could / should look into? I drink coffee and typically 1-2 cups per day. I usually drink with 2 pumps of coffeemate or something similar

I’ve been using this in blitz for a long time without realising it was an actual proper opening. It’s a good one for blitz as white as you can get a lot of moves in a short time without too many threats or attacks from your opponent.

Tea, but I oscillate between having it like every couple days and once in a week (can depend on how often I go into the office partly, since they have tea available).

This works out very well for me at the 1100 area. I've been CRUSHING people with this opening. This helps people who wants to try a unique opening + a very effective opening to start with at the 900+ area. Thanks Levy.

Lichess gave my opening as Inidian Defense normal variation and when I tried to search for something on KZbin the first video that came up was this one. What Im I supposed to do :D
