I consider this the best method to teach modes. You have underscored the major modes succinctly. I love it.

Great lesson Charlie. Modes have been mysterious to many players. Your approach is both refreshing and clear. Thank you for this insightful information.

It's like modes never really mattered. You have broken it down so well that I don't even need to learn it now.

Intervals and there placement equal flavor. The beginning of the vid is perfect. You show exactly how can be done with one C “power chord” and where you can go from there. And later on you camp very very to close to giving everyone the secret to Edvard’s “Franken Scale”. Presto Chango go anywhere you want-O. You have to learn these modes. Or you always be just a schlock guitar player. Well done 👍🏻

I've always done the mental gymnastics thing when I've tried to play modally - "D Mixo is the notes of G major....etc", but even in the one day I've been experimenting with the way you describe it here, it definitely feels more useful to get a feel for the intervals in small single 0ctave chunks and forget about the parent major scale. I would say though, that for me at least, I can only cope with concentrating a single mode at a time like this, otherwise it's too overwhelming. So I plan to spend a week getting comfortable with the Mixolydian, only then move onto Lydian and the minor modes. Great lesson - look forward to the minor one!

It is quite helpful in learning modes. One note: could you name the mode as you show it on the screen. When posting mode charts PLS post the name of each mode as used for us beginners. thks for your work on this much appreciated.

excellent Charlie - could you think of the raised 4th in lydian as the flat 5/blue note? I use that note a lot in blues but never thought of it as a use of the lydian mode. The blues scale includes both that note and the flat 7. Sorry rambling on a bit - hard to verbalize some of these thought on a computer!
@CharlieLongGuitar
@CharlieLongGuitar Жыл бұрын
Great question! The answer is no - because the notes have a different function. The b5 in blues serves to darken the sound of the scale. The #4 in Lydian brightens the scale. Even though it’s the same note the 2 scales have a very different sound. Does that make any sense???

what's the objective of this practice strategy 😊 .each mode simply changes the key and harmony against the C chord. I practice this until the cows come home in all Keys but would it tell me where l am? .😂 Thanks. Best regards.

Charlie - what if I am playing in the key of G maj and the progression has the 2 Am, in Mixolydian do I play F as the flat 7 or G as the flat 7 of Am? In other words do I play to the key or the chord changes? Thanks
@CharlieLongGuitar
@CharlieLongGuitar Жыл бұрын
Cool question! It does get tricky because Am is the iim of G which means you would technically want to play A Dorian over it. But- Am is also in the keys of C and F so you have to look at the other chords in the progression for a definitive answer!
@larryd7196
@larryd7196 Жыл бұрын
Hi GT ....So if you are in the key of "G" it has no "F" in it. If you are using "F" you are in "C" scale. "G" scale has an F#. Also in the key of "G" ,the Mixolydian scale would be the 5th mode "D" . So you are not in Mixolydian mode, unless your progression has "D" as the root. If you are using an A minor chord, as the root of your progression, like he said, you would be in A Dorian mode. the 2nd mode of "G". Which at that point would have a "G" note as the flat 7 of A minor. It gets confusing because as you move through each mode of a scale, the interval structure changes based on what chord is the root over a particular chord. In other words, each chord becomes its own "1" chord, and the intervals correspond to that "1".

Thanks for doing what you do man.. I’m finally getting into the modes after learning the major/minor scale, triads, pentatonic scales, blues scale caged, circle of 4ths we both have the same guitar poster by the way! Haha I took lessons when I was 13 for a total of 2 visits before my dad got injured at work and then I was on my own due to our financial situation. I wish so bad that this was available to me as a kid, I had the determination and drive just ended up learning covers and simple tabs that’s it.stuck in a rut for 10 years! I honestly thought that there was only one pentatonic scale, Not major or minor separately just one! Ha and I remember being a kid asking how these bands I knew could know where to go while writing or how’d they make the transition into solos that gave me goosebumps and had every hair on my body standing up which wasn’t a lot back then lol. Keep it up I’m truly grateful.l! 🤘
