Hi Charlie - I always find your lessons immediately useful. Just one issue - there's a mistake in the diagram at 12:07. The diagonal pentatonic shows G A on the 2nd string then C D E on the 1st string, but it should be G A B on the 2nd then D E on the 1st!

I didn't learn this to this kind of detail, but in studying barre chords up and down (a great discovery all on its own for me) you start to recognize the patterns of the chords depending on where you are on the neck. When I was a kid, about 12, I could read music easily. I've completely lost that skill, but still retain a few bits and pieces of chords and the circle of fifths, all that, all of which is helpful to add into these bits.

Charlie “24 Carat” Long dishing out more nuggets from the mother load vein of arpeggios. These “skeleton” building blocks create a perfect way to develop ear training for how each arpeggio sounds. I rely on my ear a lot and this method helps me connect what I hear in my head with what’s going on from a music theory perspective on the fret board. Connecting what I hear with what I see on the fret board with the theory behind it is a real aha moment. Thanks Charlie!

I didn't watch all the way through yet, but he just said we gotta map out all these triad shapes in every string in every key. Is guitar really all about memorization? I'm already trying to memorize the fretboard and the scales, this just seems like too much, i thought it would be more intuitive...
@CharlieLongGuitar10 күн бұрын
Let me try to give you a couple of analogies….have you ever studied a martial art? You don’t go in and start moving like a warrior on day 1….its drills…small movements…forms…memorization… for a long, long time. How about golf? Fundamentals like grip, aim, stance…the pros on TV are still working on that stuff. Tiny changes in movements. Adjusting to every club…and then there are all the short game techniques that have to be learned and constantly practiced. None of it is “intuitive” and what feels intuitive is usually wrong. The learning curve at the beginning of an activity is always the steepest- but you learn this stuff so that down the road people watch you play and say “you’re a natural!!” It all depends on how good you want to be…you don’t have to learn all this stuff but if you don’t there will come a time when you’re playing with other people and they start a song in a key you’re not familiar with…its not a good feeling! I wish you all the best with your playing!! 🎸🎶🔥🎶🎸

Just a stellar lesson, thank you! I'll be spending a lot of time appreciating the association of notes and chord tones/arpeggios. I've been listening to these descending progressions for years- they go back to Baroque music (Vivaldi), Bach, and resurrected in the Cabaret music in Europe in the 30's and 40's. Parisian Walkways similarly constructed, I think.

This is very similar to your triad exercise (which I love) With that said How come you usually do exercises in the key of G? The other issue is when you are in a particular key I play the scales that are in that key in other words I play all the G major scales in the key of G I don't play the corresponding scale to the chord. What do you think about that comment?

The major and arpeggio practice is to learn the NOTE LOCATIONS in relation to each other. Then you can let your creativity flow without stopping to find a note. This also allows you to find and connect chords on the fly.
