You don't have to learn how to read and write. You can actually develop just recognizing characters every time you study the pinyin for the word. And it is not like japanese and korean in where leaning on the romanization will hinder your speech because it won't. Since there are tones, you will always get the intonation right without sounding strange-- that is if you know the tones.

I found this video helpful even though I've been studying Chinese for a while now. For some of the phrases, I knew how to say them in other ways, but this was a new way. For example, I knew 吃饱了, but not 好撑. I think it's super helpful to learn the different ways people say things. I've often found that when people speak to me in Chinese and I can't understand, it's because I learned a different way to say something.
