My wife grew up in rural Appalachia and has pointed out to me that most folk music has a lot of the same core sounds no matter where in the world it comes from.
@reyne84244 жыл бұрын
Most cultures have a tradition of using a base tone and adding harmonies to it. I believe it's due to early simple instruments like skin or water drums, flutes, didgeridoos and single/double string instruments which only allowed a small range in the same key. So naturally, people started to add layers to those same tones/keys. This developed into instruments and techniques like overtone/throat singing, double flutes, bagpipes, more strings with a base tone like Hurdy Gurdys, so many other string instruments I don't know the names of or how they play the fiddle and folk guitar. There are only so many possibilities on the pentatonic scale, so music tends to sound similar.
@fredriks50904 жыл бұрын
Norwegian Black Metal also has a lot of throat singing,- except it hasn't yet developed into overtones. Perhaps it's too young of a genre to have learned/discovered overtones,- because they haven't been present yet.

@@TravelinChina In a way it has been done , A Bluegrass ballad, "Wayfaring Stranger" was done in 2014 by Bennett Konesni and the Altai Band when they toured the USA. Sung in both English and Mongolian, using traditional Mongolian instruments and only a guitar with Konesni. Bluegrass greats, Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley had early hits with the song, especially Monroe, and it's been covered by other Country singers later on. You can see Altai's and Konesni's video on KZbin. I've been trying to cut and paste the video's info, but it's not working, I'm doing something wrong, but if you type in Wayfaring Stranger with Mongolian band Altai and Bennett Konesni, you should easily find it. This is so wierd watching this because I'm a 67 yr old lady & as a small child I used to sing like this I can still do it & i can't tell anyone why I was able to do this as a 5 yr old. I used to practise in our garden shed because my mother couldnt stand it she said I sounded like a bad tempered troll! I used to blow bubbles from my mouth holding them between my lips then open my mouth as I did the throat singing, moving my mouth around so the sounds would change. I'm even better at it now as my voice has deepened over the yrs. My grandparents were Scandinavian & my great great grandmama was Basque so maybe I held an ancestor memory of throat singing! It's great to do & makes yr mouth & lips tingle.
