Thanks!!! I'm starting salsa dancing lessons on Wednesday as a part of my weight-loss effort (I've lost 35 already!). The lessons are free at my college. The lessons started last week, though, and I think that I'll find that this is exactly what I needed to catch up. I love the way that you showed the same steps over and over so many times. That was really helpful.

Salsa is a popular form of social dance that originated in Cuba in 1920. The movements of salsa have origins in Cuban Son, Cha-cha-cha, Mambo and other dance forms, and the dance, along with the salsa music,[1][2][3] originated in the mid-1970s in New York.[4] Origin Edit Students from Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, Mexico City perform at Culture Week The name salsa (mixture) has been described as a dance since the mid-1970s. The use of the term for the dance started in New York. It evolved from earlier Cuban dance forms such as Son, Son Montuno, Cha cha cha and Mambo which were popular in the Caribbean, Latin America and the Latino communities in New York since the 1940s. Salsa, like most music genres has gone through a lot of variation through the years and incorporated elements of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean dances such as Guaguanco and Pachanga. Different countries of the Caribbean and Latin America have distinct salsa styles of their own, such as Cuban, Cali Colombia, Puerto Rican, L.A. and New York styles. There is some controversy surrounding the origins of the word salsa. Some claim that it was based on a cry shouted by musicians while they were playing their music. Others believe that the term was created by record labels to better market their music, who chose the word "salsa" because of its spicy and hot connotations. Still others believe the term came about because salsa dancing and music is a mixture of different styles, just like salsa or "sauce" in Latin American countries is a mixture of different ingredients.

The 10,000 times thing is about muscle memory- your brain thinks about it consciously for that span if movements, and then another zone of your brain takes over and you don't have to think "ok, left food forward...." It took me 2 years of solid social dancing to realise that the pauses on the 4 and 8 count were just as important as the steps themselves and that's the way I taught my beginners classes thereafter. It's best to think of the 4 and 8 count as like the amber traffic light saying "prepare" (rather than "pause") for what comes next. I counted 1,2,3, "and", 5,6,7, "and" then wash, rinse, repeat, saying "and" on the 4 and 8 count. BTW in the Cuban style Salsa they tap their foot on the 4 and 8 count which is ok for slow beat music but makes footwork too busy for fast beat music. And DJ's luv fast beat music.
@strongindependentblackwoma18876 жыл бұрын
well i don't count them, is just like 4 and 8 are "silence numbers and stop"
@redsparks20256 жыл бұрын
That's cool. You use "silence" and I use "and". We are both doing the same thing ... "thinking" on the 4 and 8 count. Except it took me 2 years to realise that. Sigh! Anyway have fun ... the most important thing :)

@TheTigers62 In Latin salsa music the counts are 1-2-3 (hold 4) 5, 6 ,7 (hold 8). The clave, which is the instrument in which salsa music is dance to, occurs either on 2,3 and 6, 7, Therefore you break on 2 and 6. When you say 4/4 you are correct when talking about music, but when you talk about dance steps need to count in 8 beats. Dancing salsa on on1 timing (starting on count 1) is the americanized version. Latin / NY / PR salsa is danced to the clave instrument which works on2 timing.
