Guys to look natural dancing salsa, really the first and most important rule is to LISTEN to the music and actually ENJOY it. See where the music changes, gets more intense, starts the chorus, other percussion instruments join in, etc. You need to be sensitive to that, and to let your body flow with it. Otherwise, even with these tips, you will still end up looking mechanical. Many non-latino salsa students tend to become salsa-bots, and that ain't good. Learn to appreciate the music first.

It's a language thing. Spanish/Latin is more emotionally embracing. When people learn to convey the emotion of the situation creatively in their dance, and not just in their head, they can can can, and a cha, cha, cha :)

This is the best salsa class you’ll ever have. It gives you, without the turning and twisting that others try to teach, the salsa moves as I’ve know them from the 80’s, when this dance became so popular.

This video is very well done, it's much better compared to many others because it gives the necessary explanation of what is needed to correctly study the basic step, a fundamental technique which is, usually, not well teached. Who says it is too long doesn't care about beginners or doesn't know what salsa is.

Freddy Ramos "Letting yourself go and enjoy with the music" means you can create any conversation you want with your partner. The salsa dance steps provide the vocabulary and "grammar rules" so you both can understand each other - otherwise if the lead only spoke English and their partner only understood French, it would be a very difficult romantic conversation.

Well said, Fred. I m a Shine the Beltbuckle person. But, that s only when I with my honey. I mix that with some on the 2 mambo steps and a few turns. This turn business is out of control and they dance like trained robots. They stick out on the floor like sore thumbs. However, it s all good. It keeps the salsa music alive and well.

The biggest problem newcomers to salsa dance have is when to step to the salsa music. Use a clave in your hand and beat it as you step, so your viewers learn to hear and step in time with the proper beat of instruments .This gives the dancer a better feel for the instruments in the music and the body follows in the rhythm. Good work.. keep dancing. Any video with shines/steps on 4 & 8 beats?

I agree with Frivillig. At first, it will be hard because it's out of your comfort zone but eventually, you will feel at ease and you will wish you have started earlier. that was my case. I was too nervous during my first few classes but now I'm at "intermediate 1" and I'm always impatiently waiting for my next class. I wish I have started 2 years ago, when I first had the idea but was too shy to do so

Good job, Anthony. If only beginners bothered to find such videos, they would greatly appreciate it. As a late-intermediate / early-advanced salsero myself I'm looking at this clip as a collection of awkward movements I often see in beginners' classes. This bounce is so ubiquitous... :-) I'd love to look back at my beginnings (I don't have them recorded) to see if I did that too :-P. One question - my English isn't perfect, so could you please tell me what A. says @ 4:23 (is it "staggered"?)?

Now , 8:37 - Salsa teachers often explain this "natural arm movement". But that fits to natural going movement - forward action with transport and taking the heels for walking .Salsa Dancing has nothing to do with that . Forward and backward !! motion and sometimes every step toe heel or flat. But never as natural going !! So you cannot argue that it looks more natural by practicing natural arm movement . And indeed that complete action we see here looks a little unnatural ! But averall we like your videos - nice guy with very well teaching .

Very good video! Comment to the instructor: I like the way you explained the arms and some parts of the footwork. I noticed that your heal on your right foot is not touching on your back step (aka the back break) when you demo the basic step a a faster speed and is correct. When you demo the basic at a slow speed, your right heal is touching the floor. This is not something that dancers should get into the habit of doing as it makes it more difficult. No offense intended. Based on the video, I think you are a good instructor! Keep posting videos like this!!

Stepping slightly back on TWO as he explains it is actually in accurate. You don't step back on TWO, you actually ROCK BACK on TWO in the same general area. It is the same for the second half of the BASIC step, you ROCK FORWARD on Six. He does make some good points on some things. This video is actually decent. People can learn from this video.

BrekOnTwo is a salsa timing. You can dance salsa on1, on2, on clave, on BrekOnTwo.. or on whatever you want.. if you know what you are doing. BrekOnTwo was invented by Eddie Torres, in new york.. I think in the early '70. The scope was to teach people used to dance on1; to dance on 2! That is an harder thing for a nordamerican or for an european. You move your first step (left) on 1, and the second step (right) on 2. Doing this your right feet is on the same place of a dancer that started on 2.

Hi, just watched your video. I taught in the clubs in Washington DC and taught similar styling, however I taught that my quick (one beat) steps as a half length step and my two beat step as a whole. the combination of 1forward (a half step) and the 2 back ( half step) would equal the length of a whole step which equaled the 3 and 4 beat. I actually taught dancing before winning the Viet nan draft lottery, after serving 4 years in the navy I went back to college and subsequently became a certified public accountant ( who by their nature are very anal) which is a pretty good combination .I often said that salsa is the west coast swing version of east coast swing (mambo) Anyway just wanted to say that I enjoyed your style and my take on it.

@apersaud Dude your a beast! I just saw your social dance video. You look much more free when your dance without giving the lesson. I find your videos very useful. I'm "on 2 "myself so I just watch them with the volume truned off so I don't confuse myself. Do you sell dvds?

it's the same for women except you reverse the feet and direction of the step. The partner would step backward with the right on the 1 where he steps forward with the left, etc. The rest is identical and applies the same

But should women be trying to take bigger steps though? They are already swinging their hips more than the guy.
