Thank you for helping people be less Gothan't. You're a hero as usual, Reqi. I think a big thing with the Gotha really is just fly it around. People act like its some sort of RNG murder box that will kill you at a whim, but the fact is she's a logical aircraft that is perfect tamable, but if you want to really freak people out the Gotha is a great way to do it. It's also a great kite for teaching hot shots that they may not know as much about aviation as they think they do.

It's definitely a murderbox if you're willy nilly with the controls, slow and steady wins the race with this thing. At least if you get in trouble if you just let go it helps sort itself out

I love a big slow plane, it's a different feeling of power. It's so relaxing too.

The key for me was differential throttles. Both on the ground and in the air. I don't have a proper split throttle so I just assigned the pinky pot to the left engine and the main throttle to the right - thank Jebuz for the plane specific controls recently added to IL2. It took a little practice to get the hang of it and I need technochat to see what the values are as the controls are so physically different, but I only crash about 10% of the time now :D. Also, what's sort of working for me is this rule of thumb: NO rudder when on the ground and slow (taking off), use 'wrong' ailerons a bit but mainly differential thrust to taxi and at the slow bit of taking off. Once above about 100 km/h and above the ground, MAINLY use the rudder, with a touch of stick and, again, differential thrust. I would never have worked this out without this video!

Yeah it's definitely a handful if you're not expecting its behaviour. It will really lead to some whacky scenarios!

Another question: How do you know if you've exceeded the MTOW on a plane? DCS has a handy little number on the re-arm/re-fuel screen that goes orange if exceeded. Does IL2 have something similar?

No unfortunately it doesn't. I advocated for this when I was a beta tester but they didn't listen to me.

Should be fun watching people learn to fly this big beastie. I imagine there will be a fair amount of ditch digging. Not that I would do any better, but I plan to keep the learning curves offline, lol. I guess it's a good thing they didn't go with one of the later Staakens, eh? I have a feeling that monstrosity would have been a nightmare for the newer pilots. As well as everyone along for the ride.

Yeah that's why I decided to show a little bit extra flying technique in this one compared to other videos. The aileron control is really going to be the pitfall of a lot of people trying to fly this airplane for the first time

The guys that flew these things had big brass ones,on the real big Riesenflugzeuges the mechanics they carried would work on the engines while the plane was in flight, repairing oil leaks and water leaks, mind you that water was hot as hell and those engines were loud like a heavy metal concert lol, much fun for everyone.
