I just want you to know how handy your tutorials are. I don't play the game as much as I shud as it (tries to) share time with DCS.... But when I need a refresher, I know right where to go. THANKS.

Finally I found a comprehensive series of guides and tutorials around IL-2 planes and how to get the best of their performances. I struggled with engine management without being sure which plane had which option, what would be the effect and what key binding would be the most useful (lots of questions, right ?). Thanks for the various videos, very well put and generously shared here.

Thanks Lipo, I've been doing these for a long time now but I pretty much only post on the IL-2 forums so many flight simmers outside of that forum probably don't know about what I make here. Regarding engine management initially you can take a simplistic view that German = Auto, and everything else needs RPM, mixture, etc.. all assigned correctly. What I do is overlapping of commands on the same button so even if I'm in different airplanes I'll get the same effect (propeller pitch vs RPM, cowl shutters vs radiators, etc). This way I have common keys for what are essentially the same functions.

Thank you for the additional comment. I did not know it was possible to bind the same button or key to different actions. But now I will take the time to investigate and redo my settings. I see Il-2 totally differently now, in a good way.

If I may make a suggestion....Edit out the auto-start post "E" key and instead add a minute discussing engine management for 1) conservative fuel cruise, 2) combat and how long before engine damage and 3), emergency and how long until engine damage and maybe 4) how the plane performs in relations to others at various altitudes. I have not watched most of your videos so I apologize if you already do this. Also, the old FM for the P-40 was a death trap, especially with a bomb.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 7 жыл бұрын
Rooster Thanks for the good suggestions. I'll look to incorporate that into the Kuban famils when I get those done. The only thing I probably wouldn't do is get into the relative performance vs all the oher airplanes in the famil videos as it can change easily. I have created an excel spreadsheet that outputs EM diagrams for performance comparisons but i dont have time to do the testing for each airplane. Ive only done a limited data set on the Yak 1 as a proof of concept it worked.

Just to point out, in the video you had power at above 45" and 3000 RPM on takeoff at one point. That should be emergency mode and you can blow your engine if you keep it there too long. Also, you might want to point out the P-40 is the only aircraft without a manifold pressure regulator in game and therefore behaves quite differently with altitude changes compared to all others.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 7 жыл бұрын
Kai Lae The excursion into emergency power wasn't intentional. Unfortunately, my throttle quadrant has developed spiking issues so it jumped up there without my input after I had power set. Good point about the MP and the need to constantly adjust it with altitude.

try to fix your quadrant ( potentiometers ) with one small drop of WD 40 . Usually , potentiometers track is slightely damaged by normal using , that causes this kind of fails .

@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 7 жыл бұрын
It's not so bad once you get used to it. I can't remember the last time I blew up the engine. As long as you keep an eye on your manifold pressure when you make a throttle adjustment and avoid quick huge changes in power it's fine. Things are made worse because it doesn't have that much power to crank out, so in combat people jam the throttle forward instinctively and kill the engine in short order.

What are the link fuel mixture and prop pitch to throttle commands called in the settings (or what are their default key commands)? In some of the aircraft. Can't seem to find them and a lot of videos recommend doing it (linking them). Thank you.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 4 жыл бұрын
Only the P-47 can truly link its controls properly as that was a feature of the real throttle. In-game though if you assign multiple axes to the same control then you can link them that way to achieve the same result.

No matter what I do, the plane rolls on touchdown. This happens even with full opposite rudder and full wheel break
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 7 жыл бұрын
SoggyBigfoot Make sure your fuselage is aligned with your direction of flight when you land. If you are always ground looping or crashing then record your landings. When you review them from an external view you will probably find the nose is pointed off to the side as you touchdown. Remember to correct for that with the rudder before you touchdown and the ground loop/crashing will stop.

Why are we unlocking the canopy during pattern and landing? Just visibility?
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 5 жыл бұрын
I make these videos using actual procedures from their respective flight manuals of the period when I have them available. It's my understanding that keeping the canopy open during takeoffs and landings does improve visibility if you need it, but I believe its mainly done to allow a quick egress by the pilot in case of an emergency or crash landing instead of risking being stuck in the cockpit due to the canopy being stuck closed. This is not necessary for a sim of course, but I fly these airplanes according to the manuals.

It is a shame that this game does not allow us to fully utilize the power of this plane. All the accounts of soviets flying the P-40 seem to indicate that they would just push the engine to max and leave it there from takeoff until landing, but in this game, the engine gives out after a few minutes based off a peacetime manual that was usurped in the war by a manual with looser restrictions.
@RequiemsACTL
@RequiemsACTL 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's one the things that does get annoying with the way some engines are modeled. They're not as resilient as you would expect which hinders how you fly the airplane. I would prefer it if the engines could handle the highest power settings but that results in a excessive engine temperature / oil pressure which when left unchecked would lead to the damage rather than relying on the arbirtrary timers we have now.
@sheeplord4976
@sheeplord4976 3 жыл бұрын
@@RequiemsACTL I think that a built in multi-player profile where you make money off kills, but have to pay for maintnance/ new planes would be a good way to both get people to fly different planes and to hold them accountable for excessive engine wear, but then again, that would make the game more frustrating.
