@@havoc.7401you will often want to edit your objects after you have already duplicated them and placed them around the scene. This is more like creating instances instead of duplicates, so they will adjust based on the original automatically.

A useful thing to know is why they're linked. It's called multi-user data, and a tutorial explaining how to convert objects that exist into multi-user objects would be very nice

To understand how linked duplicates work, It's important to learn the difference between objects and object data. An object is like an empty box that can contain some object data. The object controls things like position, scale, rotation, and modifiers, etc. while the object data controls the mesh, properties of a light, etc. When you make a linked duplicate, the same object data is shared between multiple boxes. Changing the data in one box will change it in all the others, because it's the same data. The boxes themselves can have different positions and rotations, but the stuff inside them is the same. Bonus tip: In most places in blender, objects are labeled with orange icons, and object data are labeled with green ones.
@DrLobinshots
@DrLobinshots Ай бұрын
Yes, and in object data tab in the properties menu the “Mesh” is what your referring to as object data, however object data is more than just the “Mesh”. You can select any object and in object data select a different “Mesh” and it will effectively be the same as alt-d but you can do it retroactively.

Yes, select one and press CTRL + A and apply transforms. This will unlink it and make it it’s own object. You can do this with multiple objects at the same time.

But couldnt you also just edit the first one until its done, then duplicated it? Its a great tip, but also doesn’t make total sense. Its great you can edit duplicate objects at the same time. But if i wanted them to all look the same, why wouldnt i just make the first one perfect, THEN duplicate it?
